Ecoglow-- seems too hot?

I just got an ecoglow brooder and plugged it up to check it out. We are getting our chicks Wednesday. It is crazy hot to the touch, I'm worried the chicks will burn themselves. Anyone have experience with the ecoglow?

I haven't used them before but I was wanting to try. Seems though something like that would have a heat controller to adjust the temp.

No control, besides being able to raise the heat plate. It's not hot under it as I. Air temp, just the actual plate is hot to the touch.

I can easily put my hand on mine. Can you hold your hand on the warm part? If not, I'd contact brinsea and see what they say.

I have three EcoGlow units,regular size, and one of the EcoGlow50s on loan to someone fostering chicks for me.

Remember, it replicates Momma - chicks from hatch to not needing supplemental heat at all. Chicks nestle under it and run in and out as necessary. The plate is quite warm, indeed, but none of my chicks (oh, 70 or so over the past few months, I guess) have developed burns on their backs from the EcoGlow units.

The Ecoglow uses radiant heat so the air underneath it will not feel hot, but the chicks stay nice and warm when they sleep under it. I have one and just ordered a second, larger model because I love it! I have it on the lowest level and after a couple of weeks, I raised one end up by putting a piece of wood underneath one side. Smaller chicks go to the lower end and larger chicks use the raised end. The chicks will go under when cold, sleep in front of it or even on top of it when they don't need as much heat. I don't have to worry about changing the temperature, exploding heat lamps, fires or anything! The chicks can regulate themselves. Make sure that the one you have has the black (NOT silver) plate on the bottom, as they have made some changes to the design. It does feel quite hot to the touch, but the chicks do NOT get burned by it, and the pine shavings are in no danger, even when touching the plate. It's like one of those crockpot meals - Fix it and Forget it! I LOVE the ECOGLOW!!!

Thanks all. I checked it's surface temp with my infra red thermometer and it's 127.5 F. I can touch it for about two seconds and have to remove my hand.

I would think that would be too warm to the touch: as someone else suggested, contact the company to make sure before chicks climb on or under it to be sure it won't hurt them.

Did you ever get an answer on this? I just turned on my brooder and have chicks I'm ready to transfer out of the incubator and it almost burns my hand when I touch it!
