I have a lavender orpington pullet who is about 3.5 months old. She was sick with some respiratory disease and was treated with duramycin-10. She improved greatly and is looking and acting normal. However I brought my entire flock inside to weather Hurricane Isaic, and noticed that she has some sort of fluid buildup on her left breast. The watery sack extends all the way under her body. I'm thinking the vitamins and electrolytes I've been putting in her water could be causing fluid retention? Has anyone seen this before? I have felt her crop which is normal and does not seem to be connected to this watery sack. She is on laying pellets and scratch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Are you sure there is fluid there? It could be windpuff. You could try to lance it and see what comes out. Need a large bore needle and a calm demeanor. Don't use a syringe just the needle to make the hole. I like to do it like you would lance a blister on your foot. Come in at the bottom edge and flat to the body so that you don't go into the muscle.

Hey Jim. Thanks for the reply. There is not a lot of information on windpuffs in poultry that I could find unless it was occuring after castration. If you know of any good links to more information I would love to learn more about it. However, this morning the area feels smaller, so I may give her a bit more time before trying to puncture it. She is still very active, alert, and eating/ drinking well. I took her off electrolytes and put her on ACV water yesterday. I've got several large needles but the calm demeanor might be a little more difficult for me to find! We have entirely too much cleanup to do thanks to hurricane Isaac to be dealing with these pesky chickens! Thanks again...I will try tonight if she does not improve.

Glad she is getting better. I think with what your doing she should improve but I don't know for sure if it will be fully gone. But what your doing is great!!! I would be doing the same thing. :)
