Day 20 now and we can hear the chicks "talking" to us from within the eggs and one was even tapping.

I guess that means they will come out today? Does anyone know?

What has everyone done with new baby chicks in with adults? How do you keep the laying hens from the baby food? Will they be okay with everyone else (4 other hens, their "mum', no rooster) once their "mum" is with them?

Any other tips?

I've attached a pic of little T sitting on her eggs.

The first chick has hatched. It's a little black one and it was still half in the egg. I'll take some pics as soon as the chicks start moving around!!

I think the other hens won't bother them, well I don't think mum will let them! I am sure she will protect them and make sure they get to eat etc good luck !

Do you see any external pipping? (where the chicks are starting to peck at the egg shell from the inside)
When you see that, you know it won't be long.

My hens and roosters leave the mama hens alone--they know better!

Beautiful photo of your hen...enjoyed your website as well.

Yes we could hear and feel the chicks peeping and pecking on their shells.

Little T does look tough but she's very friendly. When she was a chick she would ride around on my shoulder like a parrot.

starter won't hurt her a bit....just make sure she stays well hydrated!
when she begins laying again she should be back on layer feed, and calcium supplement (oyster, etc.)
Good luck and post pics!!

What great pics!

I had to move my mama hen into her own special coop/ run with her baby because the other hens were pecking at the chick.
I've heard some people say they were able to leave the chicks in. It's worth a shot. Good luck!
