Hi everyone, my 8 month old hen is making gurgling sounds in her throat. She seems perfectly fine otherwise—very energetic, no discharge, and eating and drinking properly. Does anyone know the cause of this?? I am worried she may have a resporatory disease, as gurgling sounds coming from the throat is a common symptom. Please help!!!!!

Have you seen any of your birds with a respiratory infection before? Those can be spread in a flock by a carrier. Does she have any mucus inside her beak and throat if you look in there with a flashlight? Do you see any bubbles or foam in an eye, or nasal drainage?

Can you check your chickens crop, and feel if it is full? Crop contents can come back up into the throat and may cause gurgling if they are suffering from a crop disorder (impacted or sour crop.) The crop should be empty first thing in the morning before eating or drinking. Then the crop should fill up during the day as the chicken eats and drinks, and feel fairly full by evening. If it is full and puffy in the morning, something may be wrong. Is she eating and drinking? Is she gasping or opening her mouth?

One of my chickens was doing the same thing. Is she shaking her head a lot? I had thought my mind had worms but it turns out she just had a cold in the cold weather! I just brought her inside at night and she recovered. My turkey had systems like that as well she just had a cold and we got her meds from a vet and put her in a heated area. Good luck! Let me know if there is anything else I can do?

Hi! Thanks for everyones help! The gurgling noises stopped when she woke up this morning, thankfully. I think she may have had an impacted crop since she had eaten a large seashell the day before🤔
