You do realize I just hatched every egg I got and only wanted three hens yes>? I need to split them and start another brooder, I will cull almost all males

Randy Mashburn's champion lines, 1st year birds from Greenfire Farms 2015 French imports, as well as Brenda Little's French imports (Little Peddlers).

Quote: I knew. It wasn't until this selection for laying machines that calcium became important in the diet. And that huge amount of calcium they now need is why people have to be careful with roosters and non-layers and to not allow those regular access to layer feed. Quote: Nice job on the cleanup. It's a shame the chickens don't have access to all that pasture outside the fence. If I had your climate, they would always have pasture to forage in. We have almost nothing growing here for 4 months of the year. Here's mine part of the year. But here is what they have access to the rest of the year. Once they're down to bare ground, it's difficult to get things growing again because of the compacted soil and high phosphorus. Then their feed is of utmost importance because there is no forage for supplementation. The key is to keep their pasture rotated or lower stocking density. What is a chickensummer? Is it a time of year? Quote: Don't know what those are but if you're talking about Seramas, I'd get my 4 Ps under control before wishing for more birds. parasite, predator, production, pasture problems. Probably both and more than one type of mite. Do you give your cage birds access to a dust bath? Those things crawl so a cage won't protect them. They're sitting ducks in a cage. X2 What feed and supplements are your layers getting and how much? Please don't answer in piecemeal fashion though. I'm asking specifically for all the following. The type of feed (layer, starter, grower), brand, protein %, is it available free fed or rationed, other things like scratch or scraps and what % of the total ration does that make up. Because getting 1-5 eggs a day out of 50 hens ranging from 6 months to 2 years indicates a real problem and nutrition is the first suspect. Well the flood is over. Entirely possible. Pay attention to the dogs.
can u pm I get lost here

Started my day early today, so that I could come home early - I'm going to try to do that when I can during these dark times, to try to get some time at home before it's dark. Did a visual inspection of all the bird feet I could see (after someone posted on another thread about clipping nails), and I was glad I did. Almost all of my chickens scratch a lot in rocky soil, and therefore keep their nails trimmed naturally. But Lissa must have been dainty lately - she had some SERIOUSLY long toenails. Like, almost an inch!!!! So I managed to pluck her off of the perch without Dumbledore trying to tear me up (maybe he's learned some manners), and carried her inside while I found the dog nail clippers. She's very sweet and hand tame, so she sat calmly in my lap outside while I did the trimming. No bleeding except for one - then I spent the next 15 minutes trying to get it to stop. Couldn't find the styptic powder, so I used flour, and we cuddled for a while until it stopped. I took several selfies with her, but they are unflattering in the extreme (for me - Lissa, on the other hand, is lovely

).

Then I spent the rest of the remaining light digging another 6' x 4' hole, 12" deep. (Mostly done, need to clear some soil from the center.) One more down, two more to go, then I can plant the apple trees...

LOL Kristin! Waiting for selfies!!!!
That trunk HarmonyAnn has her foot propped on...we had one just like it that was my Grandfather's. We gave it to our son when he was here in July.
Just for curiosity's sake, if it has a label on the underneath side of the lid, see if it was made in WI.
