EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Me too. It's name is Splash.
very original

Well, in other news, my nearly 8 year old hen is not looking so hot.

She don't look like giving up too soon, she still has that spark, but her body is wearing out... Don't think she'll make it through the winter. Her limp is worse and she was sleeping in the nesting boxes last night.

I haven't lost an adult bird since Sept of 15, so guess I'm overdue.

Ok! Wow, what a tight fit... LUCKILY, I got a hold of the person with the brown chinese eggs and they are not coming until next week. By then I will have moved 2 more over to the hatcher... because I am getting 2 extra eggs!

In case you are wondering wth that thing is in the basket with the wire attached... that is a goose size easter egg with hair gel and a temp-sensor positioned in the center. I got it to position exactly center with some paper clips and twistie ties. Not my idea, saw someone else here who did it but I couldn't find a big enough water wiggler so I did the gegg (gel-egg).

My only concern with the whole deal is that the tops of the eggs seem close to the heating unit on the outermost baskets. If the egg sensor tells me its getting too toasty in there I will take out the cut up rags to make more room between the egg and heat coil. That should take them down at least a 1/4 inch and I would be less worried.

Editing to say that I did have to remove the frame and go back to tape to keep the triangles together. My thermometer was indicating that the temp inside the egg was getting hotter than the air temp so I guess they were too close to the heating coil. I noticed this pretty quick as I have been monitoring them every 10-20 mins! So now the wood triangles are attached with tape in the same fashion that the cardboard ones were before. Now, the temps are evened out and air temp and egg temp are much closer to each other.

Yeah.... My friend Glenn always gets nice bucks.
He is a real serious hunter..... Lives and breathes it.
That's what it takes. I have friends that get multiples every year but you have to be dedicated. I've hunted a bunch off and on but mostly when young. I remember once when hunting our farm near the back fence when I heard hounds coming. (illegal in MO) Soon an exhausted doe came up and jumped the fence onto my side. She stood there panting for a while, then caught scent of me and ran on. Then the hounds came up trying to find a way through the hogwire topped with barbed wire. They couldn't.
The next evening I took a hike headed for the same area. As I neared the top of a steep wooded hill I could hear the hounds coming again. So I started running to see if I could get to my spot before a deer came through. The meadow was edged in a bunch of scrub winged elm. As I was running through the scattered trees, the biggest buck I've ever seen was running straight toward me. He was about 15 yards away when he broke through the brush. We saw each other at the same moment and we both were taken aback. Before I could recover, he recovered from his shock and bounded out of sight. I got a round chambered and shot but failed.
Didn't see another deer that day.

we have had strong winds for 48 hours with no precipitation

It was windy here too but not that strong. You guys seem to get a little more extreme stuff than we do. More wind, more snow, a bit more rain and a bit colder.
