My kinda holiday!
I thought all your days were nice and quiet!

yer funny, can tell you dont have kids

Life is frustrating sometimes. I have to go do a friend's chores tonight as well as mine. So at my last trailer pick up at 3:45 I have a flat necessitating that I wait for a repair man that is estimated at ninety minutes plus the repair. Then I have to drive an hour and forty five minutes back to the yard. Then twenty five minutes to her house at least forty five minutes of chores, then twenty five minutes to my house and forty five minutes plus of chores. Then my first pickup in the morning requires my to be in at 5:30-6 in the morning.
Why now???

Hang in there. Get as much sleep as you can.

Or three. I could keep two or three of me busy easily.
I started work at 5:30 this morning which is pretty normal, but this is almost enough to make even me want to cry when I consider it will likely be midnight before I get done with chores.
My friend Seleta used to say if I had any luck in life it would be all bad. I just have to remind myself that, I have a job, friends, a home, food, health, and compared to most of the world wealth since I have extra clothes, a place to live, and extra food. Not to mention I know Jesus. OK, I can think better thoughts with that, but at the moment a lot of it feels more like a burden.
I could do with about 6 of me for a few weeks at a time and maybe I'd catch up by next year this time.

Other than working overly long hours, do you enjoy what you're doing?

@MotorcycleChick
@ChickenCanoe may your special birds start laying and may they be really good dark eggs.

To everyone:

May you all find a little bit of joy in the chores and getting ready for the holiday, enjoy safety and travel, and a great time with your family. If you are lucky enough to have one.
You are so sweet.

That is a great idea.

Does everyone want to share there favorite Thanksgiving meal recipe?
I have a great sweet potato/yam recipe or cranberry salad type dish.
Wife makes awesome deviled eggs for most events.
They're with mayo, creamy style horseradish, pickle juice, salt, pepper and paprika.
She makes another type prepared with avocado, cilantro and lime juice.

I dont really have recipes

We've been going to my wife's parents for turkey day at least 3 decades. It is about an hour and a half each way.
The meal was very similar to yours plus some amazing home grown green beans and whatever is still in the garden like squash, mashed potatoes and tomatoes. I'd wait till everyone got all the marshmallows off of the sweet potatoes before I took some. Not a big fan of marshmallows (or anything real sweet for that matter).

For the first time we're not going there because FIL had knee surgery and he's 81. Once that one heals, he's having the other worked on.
We're having dinner at our house for just the wife, 2 kids and their significant others.
My son is cooking the whole dinner - except the turkey which he is bringing from the restaurant. They ordered extra smoked turkeys for any employee that wanted one. Wife is picking up a honey baked ham today too.
I'm making the pumpkin pie. I saved a couple pie pumpkins that I'll probably prepare later today. I want to make 3 pies so I'll probably need some canned pumpkin too.

how long does it take to thaw a 14lb turkey in a tub of water?
I was going to guess 8 hours when Liz chimed in.

I managed to pick up a chest cold/cough thing that's a pain. Other than that peeps are good and goats are far. Going to FIL house Thursday so only like 20 minute drive which ain't to bad.

Argh to the chest cold. Last night I felt like that as well. Seems ok this am.

Morning Chaos
I always seemed to catch a cold this time of year but I know it was from long work hours and lack of sleep. Being run down makes one so susceptible. I never got sick after getting laid off of my job back in '06.

water temp cold but rapidly getting colder because the turkey is frozen probably 32.1F 0.5C 273Kelvin (we can use the water in the turkey's bath to calibrate)

Mornin Beautiful!!! YES WAFFLES its a HOLIDAY!!! Nothing like a warm waffle with butter and sugar on it as a BREAD with a holiday meal! And you know us Dutch do whut we wunt!!! seriously tradition!

I will show you a pic of some later, I just made some. but for now here off web

Hot lettuce is just that
Rip up head of lettuce in bowl
add sliced hard boiled eggs
bacon cooked and chopped up
and bacon dressing is made hot from the drippings (do this from my head but its basically as follows)

Ingredients

    • 3 slices bacon, crisp and chopped (I use two packs we like our bacon!!!)
    • 1 egg, well beaten
    • 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1/4 cup vinegar
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • salad greens ( lettuce, endive, spinach or dandelion)
    • chopped onion (optional)
Directions

  1. Cook bacon until crisp; remove and chop.
  2. Add to greens.
  3. Add all other ingredients to the beaten egg and pour into the hot bacon fat and cook until thickened.
  4. Serve over greens, and add a little bit of chopped onion to salad, if desired.

COPES CORN is a toasted dried corn PA dutch tradition as well, I guess these all are!!!

Its the corn in a casserole dish with milk cream egg tad flour and butter salt and peppper

Orange Cranberry sala
Cranberry Orange Jello Salad
1 (6 oz.) box of orange jello
1/2 c. cranberries
1 c. mandarin oranges
Drain mandarin oranges in a colander.
In a medium saucepan, add 1 cup of water and 1 1/2 cups whole cranberries (berries will break down to about 1/2 cup packed down cranberries for each recipe). Bring to a boil, lower heat to medium high when cranberries start to burst. Let cranberries burst for 3-4 minutes and remove from heat. If some cranberries are still whole that is fine. Strain in a separate colander. Smash berries down with the back of a spoon to remove excess water.

In a large bowl mix the jello with 1 cup boiling water. Stir until dissolved. Add 1 cup cold water. Put covered jello in refrigerator for about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes After jello is partially set, add the fruit and nuts. Cover and refrigerate until fully set.
