EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I put my kids on Craigslist yesterday. It is hard to believe that they are a month old and will be ready to wean in January. They are too cute, but growing like weeds.
Is craigslist how you usually sell the kids?

No seal clubbing for me

It's illegal in this country to sell your kids.
I'm compelled to report you to Child Welfare Services in MO

you will sweat and then your undies won't dry

food calories per pound, best is:
mixed nuts= 2600
beef jerky = 1300
nothing else comes close

best hot drink for survival is jello

try and snack some every hour, if you get in bad weather, put food in your pockets so you can eat without stopping.
try to take breaks on an uphill climb, you will generate body heat quicker when you start again
weather in the mountains can change quickly, snow any season in the Rocky Mountains, thunderstorms in the afternoon when you are going.
a good hat is a must in my pack even in summer, your body will warm up faster if your head is warm.
cross swollen streams/creeks in pairs, lock forearms and unbuckle waist belts and chest straps, pick up one of your four feet at a time, if you fall the eddy is behind boulders , swim to the eddy and stand up again

Does any of this make sense?
Yes, I have been reading trying to learn. I have not read about crossing yet. The biggest danger will be if I can't find someone to go with me. Oh well, I am alone for most things I do anyway. My friend Kristen is thinking about it though. She just is not sure if she can get the week off in August so she could at least do that week with me.

double zip locks for telephone.
your length of trip does not need a change of clothes, most backpackers going light weight for one or two nights don't bother, always buy "warm when wet clothing", polar fleece will save your life and give you a change if needed, no cotton !!!!!
I have pants from REI capris and the storm hits and the ones that go from shorts to pants

I use Craigslist a lot for doelings. Most of the males except the best go to the sale barn.

I was bummed because it was the only time I was close to an actual brick and mortar store, but I thought it was cool too.

Good Morning all... thanks for the coffee beautiful Abi!

Y'all have been rather chatty since yesterday afternoon when I last checked in!
You didn't miss much, just some squabbling toddlers who needed a nap...

Pfft, nope. Mine are super fuzzy.

Sooooooo cute. Remind me again - ducks don't put themselves to bed at night, do they?

I don't think it is, but you'd think so if you watched that Chicken People documentary!

(So many wee little tiny tiny chickens!!!!!!)
I've been getting a flurry of scam calls on my cell. Sometimes 10 or more a day. Quite annoying.
I let them go to my voice mail and just realized it may be making matters worse because they then know it is a real #.

I started answering them as "Cook County Police Department, what is your emergency?
They always hang up.
In high school we would answer the phone with a cheerful "Dead Animal Removal!". I still do it sometimes if I'm sure it's a scam...

I am not giving advice without experience to back it up, I have backpacked 5000 miles
cotton clothing kills, you can get hypothermia, find quick dry and warm when wet, poly propylene long underwear is great, cotton long underwear should be left in your car. Wool socks are great, no cotton socks

no cotton
x 100. I will also advice to go as LIGHT as possible. Even let yourself get compulsive about it. (Good site to help - backpackinglight.com) The lighter you go, within safety parameters, the better time you'll have. (Burn bans are so common for me that I've gotten used to never having a stove ever - just food that doesn't require cooking or hot water.) Of course, I often need to pack so much water that I don't have a lot of weight-room for other stuff.

It's raining! It's a chilly rain, so I'm not out in it, but I am certainly thankful, as are all the plants. All the pea, radish, turnip, and lettuce seedlings are up, as is all the garlic and shallots. Apple trees are happy - this is so much better than hose tap water.

Joe Black (who now has the moniker "JoJo") insists on coming out to greet me and chat with me whenever I'm near. He's a real charmer, and has a hysterical crow... (Smart boy, doesn't want to be culled!)

I have lots to do this weekend, for work (grading, writing an exam, etc.), as well as chores at home. But TONIGHT - tonight I'm doing some READING...
