EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I just set mine - 12 NN x GNH and another 4 "why not" Ameraucana x Marans. @ChickenCanoe , I lost the quote, but excellent point about weighing - and, indeed I do that as well. Indeed, I could not see into the marans eggs so I'll be going solely on weight for them. (I also traced the air cell for the lighter eggs - except one that was hard to see.) I'm excited (though that's tempered by being so sad about Banti's ducks). :( - Ant Farm
:highfive: Sweet! I really want marans, one day! I set 15, 13 Browns and 2 blues, they'll all be EE's.

Just a thought: How big a coop do you need? Would one of the larger Igloo dog houses work? They're nitrogen-filled in the domed part for insulation, floored with the same material, and can be rigged with a door ( may even be an option when you buy them)...never needed a door on mine for dogs.

12' x 14' at minimum. I have more chickens than I care to count....

(Probably 35-40)

I wanted marans before I even had chickens. I wanted them for dark eggs, and read a lot about how you needed to get them from someone who had been breeding and selecting for the dark eggs, so I waited and held out for ones from a breeder with dark eggs. I really like mine. The two eggs I pulled from the fridge are, I believe, from my black copper marans girl, Raven, aka Alice (she's growing into a new name), who is super friendly and sweet, and was an early layer of the darkest and largest of the eggs. I thought it's was worth the try. Still bringing them up to temp - shirt pocket method. Should get some nice green/olive eggers from these eggs...
