to be technical it means the chick has cracked a small hole in the shell so it can breathe until it gains enough strength to finish the hatching process. Internal pip is breaking through the membrane into the air cell, external pip is through the shell, and then zipping is breaking the shell around the egg as the chick spins to hatch.
