EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Nope I had one last week, I think she is on vacation ughhh  and just when Mike told me his eggs are ALL fertile!!! :he   How are you today Peter?

Well heck she picked a fine time to quit.

Mike must have candled yesterday so they did well?

I'm good.

Inch of rain had some hens drenched they all have covering but I guess they couldn't resist walking in it.

not this past wanseday but the wensday before
Multiple choice question here. How do you spell the middle day of the week?

a) Wanseday

b) Wensday

c) Wednesday

d) August

My husbands out snake hunting. The kids swore they saw a diamond back snake by the propane tank.. so he's out moving and looking for it with a shovel to decapitate it.
The rattlesnakes used to always hang out in our slab pile left over from the sawmill.
Great for rodent control but I understand not wanting them around the kids.

But how many people do you know that can spell a word wrong two different ways in the same sentence?
All those that don't care.

I'm ready for lockdown
I know you're ready - but are the eggs ready?

What day did you set the eggs?

I've only seen rat snake/chicken snakes.

What is a chicken snake?

I will keep trying though!
Live traps work pretty well for cats.
That's how rescue groups catch them.
That's also how I dispose of them.

My son does that... spell the same word, wrong, twice, in the same paragraph, and then the third time, spell it right.
That's either progress or testing the multiple choice philosophy.

looks like the little black duck that's acting sickly, is probably going to die :( I got vitamins into him and got him eating/drinking, but he's not doing very good.

The chick I was worried about, perked up.

I guess it's a good thing I ordered more ducks from metzer farms.

I'm not happy about the post office making a over night box take 3 days, and causing some of my birds to die :(
How many were dead or died since you got them - out of how many birds?

Why can't mommies have vacations??? One kid ate 4 pieces of pizza granted they weren't huge then came to me I say 30-45 minutes later saying he was hungry. My 9 year old drove me batty about going my moms because it was "his night"! Hubs is trying to watch Big Blue Nation so he's hollering at kids to be quite when he has volume on like max! Little girl is just wanting to climb all over the place, drag out toys and not pick up...... I'm ready to run. But big people's is not much gas in my car. If I could fuel it with my anxiety I'd be doing GREAT
They can. That's what fathers are for. He can take them camping or something.

I read an article in Mother Earth News years ago about a man who wanted to build an underground house, which would normally be built into the side of a hill, everything but the south side under several feet of dirt, for insulation. Problem was, he lived in Illinois; not exactly the hilliest part of the country, so he made his own hill. He'd decided that a round or oval house was the most energy-efficient, so he poured concrete walls all around, except for the southern exposure, where the wall was glass. He formed trenches in the poured concrete floor to accommodate the plumbing & electric lines, which he then covered with plywood, flush with the floor, and rolled carpet over the whole thing. Whenever he needed repairs, he rolled the carpet back, lifted a few planks, and everything was right there. The southern wall was all glass, for maximum light transmission & winter heat. Outside, the whole affair was covered with several feet of dirt....5' or so underground the temperature is a constant 50+ degrees...no need for a/c. For winter, he had a small woodstove, vented through the roof. He'd also designed a ventilation system, but I don't remember the details.

He was interviewed after spending his first year there. With very little firewood usage, he was able to warm the house comfortably, thanks to the natural insulation on the exterior, plus the heat generated through the southern glass wall. He got hit with an Illinois blizzard, and couldn't get the door open to access his wood supply. The stove went out eventually, for lack of firewood, but the inside never went below the mid-50' until he was able to dig out (don't remember how he accomplished that). He said his only heating cost was $3 and change, for gas & oil to run his chainsaw. The only maintenance was having to mow the roof once in a while in the warmer months.
I read that one too. I loved it.
I can't remember, is that the one called the Davis Cave?
Over the years they've done stories on several earth sheltered homes.

can someone share with me the day 18 candling images again.im a little worried now.
Why worry? If you did everything right up to now and everything stays the same, there isn't anything you can do if they fail.

did you know my mom in law used to tell me stories about carrying a wooden spoon in her purse to scare her children?

I love my mom in law... when she's 2000 miles away... but I always wondered how that actually helped.
It worked for us in high school. Example was my Spanish teacher who kept a lead pipe in his desk drawer. If anyone didn't behave, he would pull it out and drop it on his desk. Silence followed.
Everyone already knew how bad it hurt.

good morning

I grew up between "One Horse Town" and "Cow Town" , for all you who don't know where the west begins is Fort Worth
I thought it was at the St. Louis Arch - Gateway to the West.

@ocap A walk down memory lane. (There had been talk of cougars, puma, panthers in USA}

In 1875 a Dallas attorney said that Fort Worth, TX was so dull, he had once seen a panther sleeping in the street downtown. People believed !
Rather than feel insulted (as intended) Fort Worthians embraced the legend, incorporating it into their history and architecture.

There was never a real panther, but people love legends.
It could have happened in 1875. As recently as the 1880s, Jaguars were occasionally seen as far east as the Mississippi river. Thousands of years ago they roamed much of what is now the US.

Jaguars are the only big cats in the Americas that can be melanistic.
use to take us 3 hours to go through all the traffic lights on 183 to get to the stock yards
Ouch!

I hugged my ducks today. I realize they dislike being picked up, so I tried to stroke their backs and heads, and they tolerated that better.
I'm pretty sure my turkeys would like hugged. I just am trying to picture what's going to happen when a full sized turkey tom wants a hug.

LOL!!

I've figured that out too. As ducklings, mine got picked up often. Now that they're full grown, they prefer not to be held. Instead, I sit down and they climb on my lap. Much more enjoyable. :love

PS- ducks love chewing on earlobes. Watch out!!

Hug*all*theducks

Yup
All the chicks, poults and ducklings, seem attached to both my shiney rings, and my freckles. I haven't had an earlobe pecked at, or nibbled on, but my turkey's routinely try to swallow my fingers when getting mealworms from me. I haven't figured out how to teach them "be gentle" like you do a dog.

I won't lose a finger when they grow up, will i? Please reassure me that I'll keep my digits.
