EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

@Sally Sunshine

Has anyone felt or mentioned a lump or hard place in Harmony's belly?

This is starting to sound like what my youngest sister went through when she was a few years younger than Harmony

Me too! But it is defrosted now, so I will be cleaning coops today.
You didn't misinterpret. I have been very lazy about checking to be sure I actually typed what I was thinking. I had to go back to the post to edit it.
Thank you for your suggestions! Here in Pennsylvania, all of the bell peppers are expensive. My M-I-L got me hooked on a sweet relish, and even the green peppers are about $2 each. Not by the pound. Each.
I can't believe sweet potatoes vine. That is so cool! I thought they grew underground like regular potatoes.
When I grew my first tomatoes, I didn't know anything about them. Ditto with everything else! I plant seeds, then I am amazed at how it grows! It is a cheap experiment that keeps me entertained.
The tuber still grows underground. It's just the leaves/vine that is above ground.
The colored bells are almost twice the price of green ones here. If you can find the white, purple or chocolate ones, they are higher yet. That's why I focus on growing those.
Seeds are the way to go. A little more planning but so much cheaper.
Some stores that sell started plants are so expensive. Sometimes I've seen tomato plants as high as $6 or more for a single plant. Why would someone buy that? You can't grow $6 worth of tomatoes on a plant.

Morning. How are things in MO?

Wet but at least it stayed about 34 all day yesterday and overnight so the ice is coming off the trees.
I was walking around the place in the rain yesterday and I thought there was huge sleet coming down till I realized it was small icicles falling off the trees.

Quote: Don't cry; your guys played a great game. They moved the ball almost at will most of the game, & that fill-in QB of their's is very good, 'specially for a rookie. Could very easily have gone the other way. They gave GB all they could handle.
Thanks, Whites. Just looked like they had a chance at playing in the Super Bowl for the first time in a while. Made for an exciting last few minutes, though. Was wishing in the end for the game to go into overtime so it would last a little longer.
But, like I said when the Rangers made it to but not past the playoffs, "there's always next year!"

p.s. I've always liked the Packers and the Steelers, so I now look forward to seeing those two in the Super Bowl

What's your stance on treating nest boxes? I have wooden boxes that are probably full of things I don't care to find out about. Just dust the outside, or dust the inside and rinse eggs well before eating?
I love that ad!!

Here's the origin of the North American house hippo joke.... Sneaky little buggars, they are, and they'll make holes in your milk bags if you leave them out.
About half of my nests have hardware cloth bottoms with removable plywood floors. Once in a while I take everything out and hose them out. When I reassemble, I dust with DE and sometimes shoot 5% Sevin dust into the corners before I put nest pads back in. I sometimes sprinkle some DE in the nest pads as well.
That way there shouldn't be anything remaining on the eggs. I don't eat egg shells anyway.
What do you use for nesting material?
I've used straw, dried grass and pine shavings but excelsior nest pads are my favorite (and the hens' favs).
I have plastic nest pads too. They're washable/reusable.

I'm still not sure I get the house hippo thing. Maybe I'm just dense.

@ChickenCanoe Thanks for the link. Do you have a recipe or link for what you do with bumble foot?
There is a CEH cream but I haven't been able to find a source in the US.
There is a store/lab near here called Cheryl's herbs. They make their own ointments, oils and extracts.
I bought Calendula cream from them and extracts of both Echinacea purpurea and Hypericum perforatum (St. John's Wort). I added drops of both to the C cream.
After cleaning the foot thoroughly, I soak it in a warm Epsom salt bath for about 20 minutes. Thoroughly dry the foot, apply the cream mixture to the wounds and swollen areas.
Then cover with cotton pads and wrap with vet wrap and surgical wrap. Keep the bird on fresh dry bedding.

You need to operate it.
I used to do the invasive surgery to remove the puss ball but quit doing surgery when I learned how U of Ky treats their raptors.
Many vets here no longer do surgery. It has a tendency to delay healing.
Of course that depends on how bad it is. Sometimes it helps to get the lump out if it is huge.
I've had quicker healing than when I did surgery.
I've also injected the site with a combi-biotic.

I am not sure if I am doing anything right both in how I am asking questions for you to answer or incubating my eggs I am not sure if I know how to retrieve your answers I am computer illiterate so please help me out I am 53 yrs old have hard time remembering anything new
I'm old too. Much older than you. However I did work in automation and was fairly deep into computers.
Depending on how your site preferences are set (others may help with that), if someone quotes your post, it will show up in your e-mail.
