EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

it probably doesnt really matter -a hen doesnt know what degree she turns, but she is continually moving them
dunno, my last hatch was 87% hatch rate on their sides, turned 3x a day 180*

I'm leaning towards hand turning on their sides. I'm just too worried the string that holds the rack up could snap and then BAM a buncha scrambled eggs is all I have. Also, I'll have heat sink rocks so hopefully opening the lid won't change much. Thanks for the input!

OMG!! Where was a power failure when we needed one!

Baseball bat could have fixed the problem as well.

I went through the same thing with mine a while back. I was literally two seconds away from pulling the trigger, then thought about what I had invested in him (3 hours each way to pick him up), my end goal of getting darker eggs, & the fact that I'd have to go on a search for a replacement & start all over again, so I backed down. Besides, I didn't want to do something in anger that I'd regret later...been down that road too many times already.

That was about 6 months ago. Since then, he's been a perfect gentleman, with a single exception; when he & all his ladies were in the coop for the night & I was cleaning out the track that the door slides in, he half-heartedly pecked me. Other than that, he's been no trouble, in or out of the run.

On the other hand, we don't have short people around here to be concerned about. Tough call. You might try the same thing Kristen suggested to me at the time; keeping a super soaker water "pistol" handy. So far, I've had to use mine only once.

The super soaker is a good idea...thanks!

Speaking of weirdo's,,,

I have decide the WWD is a weirdo,  she is now refusing to clean and disinfect the  hatcher. She knows I have eggs to move into it, but acts if she does not care.

I need a more caring spouse.  So I am taking applications for people to be my spouse, Being a simple person I have just a few requirements:

Must clean chicken coops.
Must weed gardens
Must disinfect eggs, incubators and hatchers
Must make me 2 good meals a day and one lunch
Must serve me coffee, several times before noon.
Must bring me beer upon request.

if any other requests should come from me I expect prompt compliance with no griping..

Please submit your resume immediately. If you do not hear back from me do not take it personally, I expect to be swamped with replies and will only get back to those making the first cut..

Thanks,,,

No such thing.

I am burning tires, or tyres if you are from Canada, Australia, England or Iceland,  every night to help the cause.
