It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly stupid a chicken can be! Coop & run wide open all day. Come bedtime, a couple missing. One roosting in a tree behind/over the run, another under the front porch behind wood-to-ground lattice work that she had to dig under to get where she is. Probably another one or two out; can't tell for sure.

The ducks & geese gave me a bit of grief tonight but everyone is in safe and sound

and the geese were supposed to be teaching the ducks manners

Dieting for two days now salad for lunch and supper yesterday was tunna eggs and alvacoda today is a chicken patty eggs and alvacado

I never had this problem before the pullets came along, and even they are usually good about going to bed with all the others. I just started driving 8' T-posts today to raise the chicken yard fence up to 6'. When that's done, I have a brand new roll of mesh for over the top. If I lose any more I'll be firing up the incubator a lot sooner than I wanted to.

Got s total of 16 chicks out of the 24 eggs that were originally in the bator. And out of those 24 eggs, 16 were fertile, so all the eggs that were fertile hatched!

The 2 huge tan colored chicks are a cross between a BCM/Buff Orpington dad and a RIR mom

And the rest have an EE/Cuckoo Marans dad and moms that are either blue copper marans, black copper marans, EE, cuckoo marans, RIR, or welsummer

This time there was a body. I used the remains to bait the live trap. I have my suspicions... Who wants to play csi again?

Thanks. I was tempted to grab the shotgun and camp out waiting, but it's damp and I'm hurting too bad.

I'm the worst duck mom. They were too spooked to catch, so they're still out.

Whoever survives is going into the house for a week while I set traps.

That trail of feathers down to the water makes me think raccoon. Young one, maybe. I don't know if a big one would pick the bones clean like that. Maybe a mama with babies?

Well, folks, I spent my evening at a talk by Neil deGrasse Tyson. It was an ASTONISHINGLY good talk - I've listened to every single Star Talk podcast, and read his books, and worried about recycling of material, but except a few jokes and anecdotes, it was fresh and new. And that man moved ALL OVER that stage (oh, and he lectured in his socks.) I had AWESOME seats!
I also got to meet him (very briefly) - I was nervous and don't remember much. I just remember I sort of gushed like the fan girl that I am.

My life is now complete. (Until he comes to San Antonio next time...)

Power went out yesterday as well. Wife put a warm water bottle in with the chicks without asking.

I fear she's hooked. Said that I wasn't putting them in the barn yet it's too stormy and the power might go out it's warmer in the house.
