EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

this would be me trying to catch that thing.

Hi all! I posted on here not too long ago that I was thinking of making an incubator from an old metal heater. Well, my awesome, talented DH made my dreams come true yesterday! I now have a wooden cabinet lined with 2 inch thick Styrofoam (with 1/4" vent holes around top, about nine of them) and with a inner box that has an intake fan to pull air in from the bigger box, and blows it out with another fan before a heating element. Got the wafer thermostat hooked up, showed a steady 99-100 degrees all evening! 40% humidity with NO water in the pan! Now, here's my question. The thermometer/hygrometer I am using is a cheap one from Walmart, the kind you just pop a battery in and let it work. The range is showing the high as 102 and the low as like 96, with the temp staying constant. Now, my husband explained to me what all that means, and to only pay attention to how steady the main temp number is. But I would like to buy one that keeps the tenths of a degree and cycles the high and low more often (I think this one keeps the high and low until you reset it or it goes higher or lower). I think it would help me tweek the wafer thermostat more accurately.

Any recommendations on a better thermometer/hygrometer?
Brinsea spot check is accurate to ±0..2 F.
The following is my go to thermometer. Accuracy to ±0.9°F with adjustable calibration.

Big box stores won't have anything that is supposed to be closer than ±2F and are usually farther off than that. Not close enough for incubating.

Anyone hooooooome? I'm due to ship eggs this week to a cold region. What do y'all use to keep the eggs warm? Do hot hands get too hot? What lasts longest? Obviously they don't need the warmth leaving from here...

@Fire Ant Farm I picked up some "hamburger" cat treat food stuff today. I am going to try anything short of cutting the beaks on these. I may just have to watch them close. These are some of my best hens. They do well in the shows. They are my Doms from Urch's line.
Unless you cut the beaks off completely, it won't keep them from breaking eggs.

Where did you get them..Wally World have them?
Wally world doesn't carry anything worthwhile.

Exactly! What temp they get to? They can start the the embrio development.

HOW sweet!!! got pics?? @10AcreChick

I double box and put a 72 hour heat pack in the outer box, HOWEVER where are they going? you may not need heat at all, just make the timing work in a warm spell, like here its not that cold this week. Make sure the outer box is large enough to pack crumbled paper in to help insulate the inner.

Keep the heat pack out of direct contact with the eggs.

@BantyChooks I am so sorry about Maple. Don't beat yourself up. You have cared for her a lot. Sometimes we just don't know. You would not have left her out on purpose if you thought it would hurt her.Just like I did not intentionally let the handsome cock from CC get frostbite. His was not his feet though so I am luckier. :hugs

OH! I almost forgot. I was gifted an antique that I believe will make an unbelievable bator. I'll post pics later and we can all decide.

Quote: I use cheapos, I have used the bators so many times I sorta have it in head, I rarely look at the gauge anymore. Temps YES, humidity I know what size pans I fill in the coolers for the right adjustments. I cant explain other than I just know what my bators do and dont.

Well, I made the decision to steal my broody's two babies. They both look like pure, blue silkies to me and I need more blues so I'm raising these ones inside just to make sure nothing happens to them. She still has two eggs yet to hatch and I gave her one that I had in here on lockdown. What do you guys think? Do they look like pure silkie babies to you? Both have 5 toes, dark and feathered feet/legs, black beaks. Mama is a splash silkie. Possible daddys are Blue silkie, CCL, BCM, lavender ameraucana, and RIR. Less possible daddys (younger boys) silver welbar, rir x CCL.

oh you chick stealer you LOL cute chicks Jess!
