I use 1/4 inch and it works fine.

You could add old window screen for the first week or two over that for insurance.

I did a pig squeal with 4-H last year, they said that as long as the pen was at least 10x10 (two hogs) it was acceptable So I went and gave my pigs a pen that was about 40x40 for a couple months then upped it to about 60x70 and ya now what? I had the third largest hog he weighed in at 309 and I think the biggest was 320 something. I had them from January to May and they were 2 months when I got them so they were 7 months but these were commercial hogs from a hog house. Our other feeder hogs took longer, bout 9 or 10 months to hit butcher weight but they also had a larger pen.
