EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

That is very hard to see on my phone. I just read you were going to candle, and I did not find where you said how it went. Good morning!
@mlm MikeThanks. I do too, but that doe is huge. Her belly is down to her knees and as wide as she is tall. She had three last year. Who knows this year.

@MotorcycleChick Good morning.

Sorry, what I meant by that was I candled again a few hours after the 1st time, and didn't see movement or any change in them.

Oh no. When will you start hatching again?
Not until I actually have room to brood more chicks (and house more chickens). I have now hatched 30 chicks in January and February, and have more chicks coming in the mail. I'm done for a while... (I don't sell chicks, if I did, I'd be hatching a lot more - it sort of is addictive!

Ok, I didn't know if you stopped for space limitations or gonna be too hot down there soon. What do you do with all the eggs?

Well, actually, the heat was the primary reason I got so much of it done early. I need them grown up before it starts getting in the triple digits (around May), and I need to cull the extra cockerels as early as I can (and still get a good look at everyone to choose, and also get a good size to them). But I was tempted to throw some extras in and didn't because of space. I might hatch some Marans and GNHs this fall. (I think DesertChic, on the NN thread, got all her hatching done in December - she's in Arizona.)

Here are some photos - here's the little one who hatched a full 12 hours before the others and was in the incubator FOREVER waiting. He has quite the set of lungs on him, and has learned early that I will come visit him if he chirps (uh oh). His current name is "Little Big Mouth". (Yes, that leg band is too snug - I've replaced it.)

They are all super friendly, and their favorite thing to do is to sit in my hand (more than the other batches for some reason - maybe because there are only five?). I have to say, that's got to be the sweetest thing ever, feeling those little baby chick feet on your fingers.

Good luck!

Me too. I like groups of two the best.
I have no idea what will hatch in this group of 8. lol

And apparently, I "tricked" my son on accident. I asked him to change his sister/brother's diaper before they went into the kitchen for breakfast while I used the restroom... and apparently, the baby pooped the second she woke up..... oops.
