You know, I'm not that unobservant, and I'm pretty sure that this hasn't been that bad for very long - I think it's progressing kinda quick now that it's gotten hold like this. I do watch them daily, and he was totally fine day before yesterday, limping yesterday evening, and I went out to look at him today, and he's just sitting down most of the time and looking pretty miserable when walking. I'm home from work today and am fortunate to have a vet whom I trust who sees chickens - so I just called, and they have an opening at 10:30, so I'm taking him in. If it was less advanced and he was doing better, or if I didn't have the vet option, I might work on it myself (and will for milder cases). But my instinct tells me to take him in...

I got that diagnosis on another thread earlier tonight - I had no idea, felt very dumb and very guilty for missing it, and being lax for checking my birds (who I need to start doing more careful health checks on). I read a LOT of different cures/advice, etc., and have been discussing with Beekissed on the Breeding for Production thread tonight. I pulled him off the roost tonight for the first foot soak (he was sweet), and coated legs with castor oil (following Beekissed's recommendation from her experience). I'm going to also check and treat everyone else while I'm at it, starting with the four other birds with feathered legs... I'm going to do it every night for about a week and see how it's going - I didn't have things set up well tonight (I'm doing this alone) so the oil application wasn't as thorough as it should have/could have been. Yup, that's immediately what I thought, too! My Australorp gets them REALLY easy, I tried the whole Vaseline thing, and castor oil, and soap and water, and a combination, the only thing that eventually worked was two doses of Ivermectin a few weeks apart. She is finally regrowing scales back. I was dosing the whole flock for lice and mites, anyway, so it worked out.

I sure hope our current administration changes this new FDA ruling about having a vet script for injectables. Pain in the rear even though all I do is call my farm vet. Just a pain in the rear for both of us. I was making an order to Valley Vet but had to call to get the scripts on file first. Valley Vet then needs the birthdate of the animals you are treating..... Are you kidding me? I have hundreds of animals..... . Then they asked the following: Her breed is, Angus. Her color is, Black. She is not neutered. Her name is, Ribeye Medium Rare.
