Love the avatar ralphie! I really don't like it when people make duck stuffed animals that don't look like ducks! Thanks for sticking up for ducks by showing in your avatar that ducks should be shown as they really are, elegant, charming creatures, and not blobs with legs and a bill! Thanks for protesting against such bad duck portrayal!

I've got a legbar and some SH right now, they're pretty cool birds...

I used to want polish very much, but I'm hearing more and more bad stuff about them, so I'm thinking to keep more utility breeds better suited for my climate. I don't need chickens that I need to give special care for cos they're too dumb/sickly to exist like a normal chicken.
I've had several varieties of polish - black, white capped black, gold laced, etc..
The reason I'll never have them is the vulnerability to predators.

However important Cons of night jobs are:

1. lack of natural daylight = depression and low vitamin D (which increases risk of osteoporosis and cancer)
2. elevated cortisol levels = issues with weight and sugar regulation
3. less people to talk to/make friends

Mammalian bodies were meant to sleep at night. We kind of mess with that at our peril in the long run.
Couldn't agree more. I spent well over 20 years of my life working evenings and midnights plus - what would you call 5:30 PM to 4 AM?
Few/no friends other than co-workers. Every time I got a girlfriend it ended because of my work schedule.
I had no choice over the shift other than to quit the job.

No - he didn't mean to unplug it. he was just looking at it, and didn't realize he knocked the cord loose.
He felt bad about it. ^.^

And for what it's worth, he pretty much gets more attention than anyone else, due to his special needs. We have to sit down and explain basic concepts to him that everyone else gets. If anyone feels neglected, it's our 6 year old, because she's developing normally and we have higher expectations of her.
Accidents happen.
After I built my huge high powered combination cabinet incubator/hatcher I plugged it in and about a week later, the plug just fell out of the receptacle. The receptacle was about 70 years old and had lost its grip. No problems since I replaced it.

I hope you read the "what if the power goes off" link I posted.

Remember these?

Got 7 chicks from the 8 eggs that were not broken

Did not expect any to develop let alone make it.

Will post chick pics when I get home from work
Good outcome from disaster.

I agree. I am not going to try nights.

I have some pretty eggs too and there are other blue egg birds out there.

The quetros lay lilac, orange, red ochre, spotted pink and green eggs. And the roosters are very quiet.
i need to look these up

What about jace?

They still have yolk inside so they are currently resting half in the shell. I haven't heard much noise from them is that normal? First time duck mama here

GOOD MORNING, COFFEE CREW! HAVE AN INNOCENT DAY! TALK TO YOUR BATH MITT, TAKE A NAP, AND DRINK YOUR JUICE!

Thanks, MC! I'm sure I have a bath mitt around here somewhere...

We just have a photo bombing turkey.
I LOVE this photo - you seriously need to enter it in a contest or photo of the day or something... "What to do when your turkey is a photobomber..."

Quote: They are NOT. They are little evil things that make my life miserable. They like to sleep in trees, and have been known to seduce poor Monkey, their rooster, by squatting and lingering around him, and then scare that bejeezus out of him and the marans so they won't roost at night.

This is an updated photo I have of them:

Quote: Great, thanks, now another breed I'm going to want.

Quote: Banty, I hear REALLY great things about Buckeyes for your climate. And Chantaclers (sp?).

Quote: I can vouch for the three youngest - you have awesome children.

Well, I am taking the day off - to do more catching up on all the chicken and garden chores. But I JUST woke up (12:30pm) - I think my body was protesting that I was pushing a little too hard lately. And I think my brain was also in need of a refresh - when that's the case, I tend to have extremely vivid dreams that seem like they're still real when I wake up. @Phage - for some reason, I dreamed that our department was moving in its entirety to Stanford for some bizarre reason, and I kept sitting in a series of orientation meetings, meeting the new staff, being informed of the software and course management systems they use... None of us had a choice, but in the dream, it was no big deal. But IN THE DREAM I thought, "Hey, I know chicken people in California. Phage is there! Kev is there! It'll be neat to be in the same state." (Yes, I realize how big California is, Texas is big, too.

) Then, as dreams tend to go, I was in a minibus and negotiating buying a freshly baked cherry pie and blueberry pie from a young baker in the seat behind me, but I didn't have enough cash, because it was $60 per pie. Then I woke up. WEIRD.

I gotta get going - need to get some stuff down today. @Pensmaster - I may go buy those fire bricks today at the local building and fireplace supply.
