EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

There's glacial gold here, not a lot but people have panned for it and found some. Not a lot of info on it cause nobody talks about it. For some silly reason the state owns all gold in NY state, any gold or silver found even on private property is property of the state, so you won't get any info on anyone who has found it or how much they've found.
"very few historic reports of gold discoveries exist within the state. Although there is no doubt that prospectors have explored the creeks and rivers of New York since the early settlers arrived from Europe, there was certainly no reason to announce any rich discoveries publically. Several stories of early settlers paying for supplies with gold dust makes it quite likely that plenty of gold was mined in the early days, but little has been documented."

Stories abound here like miners hiding their gold is cracks of rocks, much like the ones my chickens lay in, go to town and get killed never to get their gold again. I have spent my fair share of time looking.
When the dam broke down here people were searching for gold as it's the best time to look.
The pit the miners dug next to my property in the 1940's was huge. 65-70 feet deep 300 feet long 200 feet wide and it was straight down. No guard rails. Property has been divided up into 5 acre pieces and homes going up like crazy.

Craftsman quit making their good claw hammers, they were only 22oz but smacked hard cause the head had a lot of weight hit a lot harder than a 28oz Eastwing. And the claws were long and thin, roof truss place I worked at years ago used them exclusively. The claws on the Craftsman you could pry the webs in easy, Eastwings were difficult and would sometimes damage the boards.
Few yrs ago I went to swap a tape measure, warranted for life, they no longer make them, they gave me a Stanley in trade, still warranted but you have to mail it to Stanley....
Every once in awhile I strip a ratchet, Sears has all sizes rebuilt ready to go right under the counter, trade and off you go. Don't know how it'll work once they're gone?
have to find a craftsman dealer

Did you ever eaten Armadillo?

No we don't have them in our area. Heard they could have leprosy?
Was going to try a opossum I shot in the chicken coop but the wife wouldn't help me skin it, told me to throw it over the bank and get my drunk azz to bed Lol! It was so ugly I don't think I could have. My oldest daughter got some good pictures the next day of a huge bald eagle eating it and entered it on a news channel online, they featured it that night on TV for the pic of the day.
Someone online asked her what it was eating, "opossum guts" Lol!

Quote: My mower is down right now. Drive belt broke. I have to get it going this week or I'm in trouble.
.
I'd have had a heart attack on the spot! I did almost put a hand down on a rat snake that was hanging on a mortar joint between two blocks of the basement wall, though. I'm so paranoid about snakes in the house that I actually shot one inside the house last year in the basement. Came in once to find a shed skin in the Venetian blinds...'bout 6' long. DW don't know about that one.

I got lucky this year with the mower, so far. I'd pulled the battery last year & set it in the basement, on the charger, where it stayed 'til yesterday. I'd also run both tanks dry, so I had no gas-turned-to-shellac in the carbs to contend with.

I re-installed the battery yesterday, poured <a cup of gas in each tank, & hit the switch. I cranked a while 'til the fuel lines were full, and fired up. No problem; didn't even get hung up & have to pull it out.

Super! Except - what will entertain us now that we don't have mower repair stories to keep us occupied?

@Fire Ant Farm We have the same lawnmower. I have to stay on top of my grass also, especially around the pond. Seedlings quickly take root and become TREES before I know it. I wish I had taken the time to really clean up around the pond during the drought, would have saved me a lot of work that I have to deal with now.
Yup, trees in a week, it seems! I keep clawing away at it. Should have done more during the winter - I still have a lot of stuff that needs to go into the chipper.

have to find a craftsman dealer

Hoping they still honor the warranty.
Most of my tools are Craftsman.
I bought a outside wood boiler about five yrs ago, a Wood Doctor cause it had a 30yr warranty cause all the others were 20yrs. Mine is the boiler plate steel one but they got into making stainless steel one's, bright idea no rust. Stainless can't take the heat and cooling, cracks. Company went out of business...
New company took over and uses their name. I contacted them twice, was unsure if the part I need that closes the door tight, broke a couple times and I welded it but have to grind it down cause it slips into a hole in the handle and thats where it broke. Wanted new stickers also, they peeled off one side. I was even willing to pay if it wasn't part of the warranty. They refuse to talk to me cause it was bought pre when they acquired the company. Pretty crappy. I'll have to have someone make me one cause I can't tighten it down as much as I'd like, not quite air tight, I don't want it to break again.
The company is Canadian, not sure how their laws work on such stuff.

my craftsman dealer said the waranty would still be good

I find it quite incredible to know, that you find gold, and then send it to other place then your safe.

I am just incredibly honest and if the Governor wants the gold and silver, I want to make sure he gets it. Even though his last name is Dayton and his Grandpa founded Daytons and Target chain stores and his wife is a Rockefeller, he is hurting for cash I am sure.

I just mailed/shipped 15 chicks to a person out west. It only cost $42 for shipping, padding and boxes.

I was amazed at the fees.

Considering how poorly we do with shipped eggs hatching. It costs $25 with packing boxes and sleeves to send a dozen eggs. If you get 50% on the hatch you do well.

If the eggs are $40 a dozen (my legbar egg price) it comes to apx $10.85 a chick.

If you buy 6 chicks at $15 each. Of course they get a portion of the shipping fees added on to them. Just seems more reliable to me.

Have any others of you tried shipping chicks? I was surprised how smooth it went.
