EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Sh sh there are children here!

I considered that. I also considered that from about 2-11 years, children love to lick people. It's funny to make Mom and Dad react!

If they hatch, i'm going to have to butcher as soon as they get between 12-16 weeks. There's no way hubby's gonna want us over run with turkeys. 1 tom is enough for him lol

Goodness! I can't see any turkey being ready for butchering that soon.

Ours were pretty large at 4-6 months old. I just can't really wait for them to go through puberty and start fighting.

Someone came in & helped themselves to a bunch of firewood that I'd brought into the house a whole bunch of years ago. It had to be someone who knew us, knew the house was empty all day, and knew that the dog inside wouldn't bother them. All they took was firewood, despite guns, cash, and other marketable stuff throughout the house; some in plain sight. There was a pile of wood behind the house, as well; enough that someone could back up to it and take off with a pickup load and I'd never have noticed, but it wasn't dry.

I called the cops only to let them know that someone was working the area, in case something of real value came up missing. State trooper showed up and we "took the tour". As he was leaving, I mentioned that I might put a sign at the end of the lane..."If you need something, just ask me; I'll probably give it to you...but please don't steal from me". The trooper's response: "If the b_____d comes back, shoot him"!

State troopers are very wise, I always knew this.

Well looks like we have another atmospheric river coming this weekend. Heavy snow with levels down to 3000 and major winds. Power outage likely. Of course lockdown starts Wednesday.

ughhhhhh have you a back up plan? lol Good luck!

Okay, I think that I have found the error in my past hatches. I saw a little bit of a pattern in how the humidity has affected the hatch. My first hatch got a 50% hatch rate at 45% humidity. The last one that I had was a 10% hatch rate at 27% humidity. I'm just weighing my eggs now and now I had them at 50% humidity for all 18 days, by the end they were at 12% weight loss. Please correct me if it shouldn't be this dramatic of a difference.

First time hatching ducks, please give some advice
Dont mess with them during lockdown and hatch, they take a long long time to get out of the shell unlike chicken eggs.
this should give you plenty education lol

these were my poults at 10 weeks.... so if they don't fight, I can give them a few more weeks to get full size... but they were already pretty large. 3-4x the size of a chicken lol
My concern is having a bunch of toms running around and fighting.

I'm not really a sports person, but I loved the Orioles when I lived in Baltimore.

Babies put themselves on the roost by themselves this evening - didn't even have to go in the tractor coop. And yes, I took a different path back to the house. Didn't want to risk another knock to the noggin.
awesome! glad your head is still intact

Oh good grief.

Actually yes, temporarily - went to medical school at Hopkins, so for the first year I lived right there in the dorm. Gunfire at night and everything. Rented apartments after that and then a house in the end - my last year I lived in a house one block from Pimlico - VERY cool!
Pimlico! Thats awesome!!!

First time hatching ducks, please give some advice
what do you need to know?
When is lock down for ducks?
Is turning them three times a day goog enough?
Has any one hatched out anacona ducks before?
ancona is a 28 day duck, so day 25, make sure you sponge once a day for a few days before lock down too
Oh no!!

Puffballs are so good.

My cousin found a lone giant puffball growing alongside his car when he got off work last year. it weighed 11 pounds!

He ate on if for a week he said....His wife told him every night he was going to die from eating it..
lau.gif

If a puffball is pure white and has no indication of a fold or root/stalk structure it is normally good...or so they say. But I find them all alone here most the time.
i have THOUSANDS of puffballs, and you are telling me they are edible not just fun to wait to stomp on??

100 EGGS DUE TO HATCH ON THURSDAY. 3 different breeds. I hope I figured it out this time.

I just threw like 15 more turkey eggs into my incubator after finding a nest in the yard. LOL Didn't want to eat them, didn't want to just throw them out. :hmm ****, now I have staggered hatches going on. Tell me I'm not totally insane lol
yes you are, but oyu already knew that

@Sally Sunshine I still appreciate the pallet playground and shelter idea. Mine love it especially the kids.

Here are my last two dairy kids. Now it is time for the boars.

Cute!!

Did you know my baby's so prissy she refused to touch her birthday cake????

The toddler took a handful. LOL

She wanted nothing to do with her party haha
I don't think I've ever seen a baby refuse to smash a cake before. but she did. LOL
She was happy about the little ride on car though.
Love her!!!
