EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

The verdict is in... A one-legged duck will not swim in circles, well, unless she's trying to scratch her head with the remaining webby. Then she'll start going in backwards circles to the great amusement of her owner.

Yay for Chrissy!

@BantyChooks
Duckling came into the room making eating sounds. She then removed the plate she had against her mouth to reveal Spider in her mouth.
He's now being eaten from a bowl.

Well, I'm finally done with all the chicken stuff (just in time, in the last of the light). All brooders cleaned out and refreshed with new bedding, all feeders (adult and chick) refilled, all waterers scrubbed out with soap, Largest group of chicks (25) weighed and photographed, and got their leg bands changed. I'm so exhausted - about to soak in the tub and try to feel normal again. didn't get any of the gardening stuff done today that needed to be done, nor the growout housing work. So much to do it makes my head hurt...

You do sound busy!! Take a breath and regroup---it's the only way! Good night, all!

Well I didn't get near that much done today. I did get the chicks in the brooder. They learned real quick where momma was.

One more DC out with one pipping. If it makes it it will be 8 of 12 shipped

The Altsteriers are doing well. This is my original rooster from 2016 NY Hal. They are laying well and the bred for meat part seems true although they are a medium sized bird. Good sized breast on the rooster.

They really do seem like nice birds. How do they handle heat?

Seems like all chickens in NY handle the heat and cold well. Every and any breed rare or not, greenfire birds, whatever is available here everywhere.
Leghorns to Chanteclers and Buckeyes. Honas and Cemanis, to Icelandics.
Naked Necks thriving here.

Planted the other half of the potato multiplier onions also, no sign of the one's I planted in the fall coming up yet, but nothing living here yet except for the horseradish and rhubarb starting. Had 30* and snowing last couple days, 70 today, sweating.. and 75 tomorrow, probably snow next week.
Good 'ole upstate NY weather.

They did well last year but I think we only made it to 108. They take awhile for eggs to get up to size. Average is 55 grams but the second year hens are laying 63 grams. Until this hatch they had a decent % rate. This time I think I'm at 50% with them. Hope one of my rooster isn't out of sync.
