EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hi all! Quick question---I have had my first chick hatch tonight in my Brinsea Maxi II Advance. It is a smaller incubator, I know, but do y'all think it's ok that my new chick is in there with 5 other externally pipped eggs and kicking and rolling them around? What if their pips end up on the underside? I'm worried and want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

I LOVE CRELE!!! did you order the eggs? CONGRATS so cute too!

FIRST CHICK. ALMOST 2 DAYS EARLY. I think that they are fine even with the time difference. He zipped in less than 15 minutes, already walking after 20. Seems very healthy. Only 2 other pipped but I think that more will come with this good news.
(I am hatching bourbon red turkeys)
It is the first chick of the year. Lets go.
I will post pictures tomorrow afternoon.
go turkey go!!! so cool!!

5 of my 15 have hatched so far! See a couple of other early pips I think. Go babies!!!

GREAT NEWS!!! come on babies!!

It's been a bit since I've posted, and I'm so excited! Our first quail baby hatched!
YAY!!!! look how widdle!!! so cute!!

So I had to assist with the hatch of some very hard shelled, very shrink wrapped chicks last night. I used bacitracin zinc on the membrane instead of water and now, the next morning, the chicks that seem to be okay aren't dry because it got on their feathers. They look a mess and I'm worried. I washed them and put them back in the inky to dry before I left for work but I'm really worried. What do I do?
if I need to wash I put them back in the bator till fluffed nothing much you can do if they are still greasy besides wash. since you already did I would give a few days before you wash again.

Good Morning all!

I have a busy day (taking my dad to 3 different doc appts), so I probably won't be back on today.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi Heather! sucky doc day eh? growlssss

Hi all,
I have a question for you.
I am hatching some eggs for a family member that lives 1 hour away.
I would like to transport the eggs(yes eggs, not hatched chicks) to her before they hatch. Strange as it may seem, her kiddos want to see them hatch.
Now before you say I should have planned better, save your breath. I know, I know, prior planning was not done!!!
I have no problem with this transporting to her, however I am not sure at what point the embryo could handle a little movement. I have a inverter that will plug into my car, so I will be able to keep them in the brinsea octogan incubator.
The temp is no problem. My issue is with the embryo and when it is able to withstand some movement. Of course it would have been easier to have started them at her house, but why make things easy on me??
They are on day 5, and all are developing nicely so far.
Also if anyone has done something crazy like this, how did you wrap them to protect them from too much jarring.
Any help appriected
-Nellie

I would WAIT until day 10 at least day 14 is better. thats my story and I will stick to it. you want them to watch, but they will be stronger to transport later on. I dont want you to mess them up and the kids dont get to see them hatch. @Nksg75

They are all starting to try to flap their wings and are perching on EVERYTHING! I let them outside the other day, (so cute!) and they loved exploring and pecking the grass.
Nice!

I go in lockdown today, hopefully 28 naked necks in the next few days. Well approximately 1/4 of them will be mutts, have one hen that's fibro jersey giant/silkie. Hoping at least a few come out naked neck with black skin, those will be the only one's I'll keep. Rest of the pure naked necks will be sold or given away if need be (cheaper than feeding them for too long).

Good Luck! I candled the geese eggs here, one is drawing down and puffin up in the back of the shell, internal pip soon I hope, put that one in the hatcher with the chickens in lockdown! I soooo hope I get these to hatch, will candle the others again around noon to look for more drawdown and again this eve.

Do you have the pure black NN with the red necks? I know you have some cool stuff, and you had some amazing whites that you took pics of, I forget what they were though!

Caught up...

Good Mornin looks like its HATCH DAY AND WEEKEND!!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!

I have a half full hatcher in lockdown and goose eggs heading in when I see drawdown too!!

Hey, Sally, how goes it? I'm cross posting. Looking for some expert advice regarding an unabsorbed yolk. Should I cull, or should I wait a bit? Huge chick, no wonder he wasn't able to make it out.

So here's my question: Of the 2 chicks on the half shell, one made an exit last night, and was dangling an unabsorbed yolk that was about 3/8" in diameter. As of this morining, if it has receded any, it's not much. The chick is active and moving pretty good. My question is: should I wait, and see if it completely recedes? Of course he's been dragging it through all the stuff in the bottom of the bator. No way to keep something like that clean. I did swab around the umbilicus with betadine. Should I cull now, or wait it out. Looking for response from folks who have had similar circumstances, time frame, treatment, and what the outcome has been.

As for the other chick on the half shell: she popped out and is a bit crusty around the edges. But her feet and her belly look good.

This brings my hatch rate to 90% if the yolk belly and the DIS are counted as losses.

Hatch rate if yolk belly makes full recovery is 95%.

I have found they either make it or not.

I do set them in a deep egg carton (egg hole) and try to keep them upright and alone (if I have entered the hatcher) Otherwise I leave them up to their fate. Let God decide if they live or die.

Good luck.

Do any of you hatch in the incubation egg trays? I have been thinking about it but worry they will get stuck on riught edges, cut and die. I am running out of foam egg cartons to cut up and use and they either fall apart or stick after a couple uses ( I disinfect and clean them with bleach, which seems to eat the foam)..
