EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hi! Question for you all.

Is there anything different that I need to do with regards to incubating bantam eggs? My eggs just arrived today from CA from TJChickens. I'll let them settle for 24 hours on the counter. Same protocol of no turning for first 2-3 days? Same temps? I incubate at 99.8 degrees and about 30-35% humidity the first 18 days. Then bump the humidity up to 65% at lockdown. These are my first Bantams. The eggs are so TINY!

As Banti said, they might hatch early. My understanding (just understanding) is that they might even hatch day 18.

So I just did the water test on day 17 and when I candle them they look like their supposed to by that I mean it's all dark inside and I see some veins lol but I did the water test and one sunk and the other floated but never moved any ideas? Thank you!

Don't do a water test until day 23, and AFTER candling for pips.

I suspect I am doing one of the more surreal things tonight that is possible to do.

Looking for cause of death in a dolphin.
What is killing them will kill us next - it is the same water we share

Ever listen to Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis? Not a big 'conspiracy theorist' myself , but dang concerns me on the whole Fukushima nuclear meltdown. I'm not on your coast, but if I was I'd be very concerned. IMHO, the whole global warming/climate change crap is peanuts compared to that.

Candle and weight tomorrow or today I guess it's after midnight. Boys are home from school should be fun. Hope to get them to shovel poop. I am a little behind with the sore back. Last snow we got melted and there is no lack of mud. Going to fall asleep shopping for fencing...thinking about going vinyl on top of runs and inside for dividers cause it should be easier to work with.

The water test is ONLY for at the very end after incubation, when you are ready to pull the plug. don't do it before then. Veins are good. Otherwise, unless they are stinking or rotten, best to leave them alone and hope. I've had more than one egg that I was sure was dead surprise me and hatch.

What is killing them will be killing us next. We share the same water.

Did you know that Dolphins hear with their lower jaw and sleep with one half their brain at a time??

Neat!!!! Didn't know about the jaw, but I did know about the brain. Pretty cool. (The fungal lab in our department serves Sea World, and we've had our own share of dolphin mystery diagnoses...)

Got a mess of lumber sanded and sealed (not all of it, but it got too late to be making that much noise out on my porch after 11). Will start again in the morning, but meanwhile, about to wash the sawdust out of my hair.

Didn't know you canned chicken. Do you de-bone first?

Some. Leaving a bone in (like a wing in a pint jar, leg/drum in a quart) gives more flavor. Not to mention makes faster work of cutting up the meat.
I sometimes debone all the way, but that is for the times that my old mindset flares up, and I can't handle the reality of what I'm eating.

I did can chicken stock last year. And broth. I'm surprised how often I use it. I also have turkey broth. I don't use it as often.
I'm going to start doing this - I put mine in the freezer, but it would be nice if some could be in the pantry.

Quote: No, we mean "canning" by putting it up in a Mason jar/lid and preparing it by whatever instructions/methods are safe for the food (e.g., acid foods are ok for boiling water, but low acid and meats need to be done in a pressure canner).
