Around this area lots of folks heat with wood. Several have systems where the wood is burned outside & piped to the inside. Never seen the workings of one, but I assume they use a wood-fired furnace of some sort.

I have one. Outside wood boiler. Love it. Mess outside, no chance of house or chimney fire. Some circulate through baseboard ours runs through a radiator in the plenum of the oil furnace, blower runs off thermostat, heats just like the oil furnace nice even heat except a couple thousand a yr cheaper.
