EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Wow, good point. I really never thought about that.
At least I would hope at our local Tractor supply that NONE of those employees would own a chicken. Considering their knowledge of chickens!!

Location:
Tractor Supply... and action.
(Me) "what breed of chicks are those?"
(Employee) "they are pullets".
(Me) "yes, I see they are pullets, what breed?"
(Employee) "they are pulletts, ma'am".

Take two:
Me) I point to a chick that has its neck bent almost backwards.
(Me) "Sir, I believe that chick has wry neck, it is unable to keep its head up, and is struggling to just be able to walk".
(Employee) "no, ma'am, that chick is fine, sometimes they just need time to get acclimated to a new environment".

Sadly, it is most TSC. I live 45 minutes from 3 Harley shops and three TSC. All of the TSC are last resort places. Even when I'm patiently explaining (as you have) something, they swear I'm wrong. I've heard that pullet is a breed, and my favorite!! Last year something happened across the US that they were selling French White Muscovies as Pekins. I was sucked in, and learned of the others later. I called a lot of hatcheries that they receive birds from. No one fessed up. Seems it might be happening again this year. I own Pekin and Muscovy. It's hard to miss the difference as adults.

I like how we keep going from summer to winter every other day.....

Are you going through "the change" with your DW?

It's just pretty sad that we have a massive regional distribution center here and ours is so bad. Oh, well...we do have a lot of great farm and feed stores, so I'd rather shop small anyway.

I get my chicken feed from a local mill, 17% layer mash 50lbs $10. I figure every third bag is just about free compared to TSC price.

I pay $22 for a 50lb purina :(

Morning peeps,
Hope all are well.

Looks like it's time for me to go predator hunting again. Spring brings out the hungry animals and looks like they are coming for my flock.

Lost a hen and a rooster Thursday night, set up and waited fri night, had a fox come in right about dusk. Shot at him, didnt get a clean kill, which really bugs me due to the fact that I don't miss. Was hoping I had at least scared him away for a bit. Lost another hen and a rooster yesterday afternoon. This seemed different though, no feathers, no sign of a struggle, just gone. I could tell something was different when I went to lock up due to the fact birds were all scattered and over half were not in the coop well past usual roost time. When I came out I had onesies and twosies come running to the coop. Was hoping maybe the rooster at least was hidden up somewhere so I did a walk around this morning before leaving for work hoping to hear a crow or see him pacing the coop door trying to get to his ladies but it was silent. Put out the trail cam and realized the batteries were dead.

@MotorcycleChick Thank you for the Java.
