EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

DH shot a snake off the brooder last night. That's only half of it.

Haven't lost anymore birds but the fox is back. 3 days in a row and both sunrise and sunset. Not sure when I will get a chance for another stake out but I don't plan to miss for round 2. If i get him in the crossharis he's a gonner. Looks like he's a bit too comfortable for my liking.

I hope you get it, before it gets something.

this thing looks down right dangerous
Interesting the picture is there. It does look rather dangerous.

I have 10 lockdown dates in may and still struggling to get the redwood incubator going to use for a hatcher. It climbed to 135 and melted 2 thermometers. I think I have a wafer laying around somewhere. Will start there.
Good luck!

Classroom chicks are a week old today! Wow, times flies.

Only had time to get one picture this morning when I went in to help my daughter with a project.

So cute! This is "Chocolate" as named by the class, and my daughter's favorite.

Awwwwww! You taking the chicks home, or does someone else get them?

Cute, congratulations!

2 days Untill my eggs hatch, It's so hard to wait

@campingshawsHere are a few pictures of my three. I can't tell which are repeats as I tried to get the third chick. The first two are definitely different chicks. Any guesses?

First pic and third pic middle bird look like cockerels. It's the same one?
I honestly don't know. I will need to take a box out with me so I can get all three out I know the first two pictures are separate birds, but the other three are attempts to just get them all and I kept getting two with one ducking behind.
It doesn't help that all my Easter Eggers from that bunch ended up black too except the two CL marked ones.

It looks like the darkest one could be a cockerel, the one pink toe is likely a pullet. Not sure I could distinguish a third. Mine are 5 weeks and also at an "in between" stage. I'll have to see if I can find an obvious cockerel tomorrow.

I've been preoccupied with the grown men in the legbar/leghorn brooder.

I have a bunch of them in my HRIR group. If I continue to get numbers like they say 75% cockerels, I may just breed a few for me. I can't afford to keep raising all these slow growing cockerels. I had 9/13 cockerels last year, and it is not looking much better this year.
