EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Ralphie - her point was that she was dealing with shipped eggs, and in the past, when she has pulled clears, she would open them and see the bullseye (confirming that the person sold her fertile eggs). She had someone claiming that the X-rays would make the bullseye go away (so that if it wasn't there, not to claim the vendor sold her eggs that weren't fertile). She was kinda calling BS, looking for confirmation.

I have a meeting at 1pm on the 13th, but if you want an early lunch so I can make it back, sure!

@meltel, @daxigait , @kajira and anyone I missed who needs them - :hugs
:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs

I slept obscenely late today - must have really needed to catch up on sleep. Which is all well and good, sleep is great, but I have stuff that needs to get done and now less time for it. So I'd better head out.

- Ant Farm

Thanks, took me a while but we did figure that out...

You poor southerner. :lau

Hatch turtle eggs then you can candle them for over 100 days...

Depending on how fast I could get out of my son's oxygen apt in the morning, we could maybe meet around 11-1130???? Red lobster near your work so you can get back to work quickly for your meeting?

About this time of year, find a female turtle and follow her until she lays her eggs.

When we were kids we would find them in the fields when we cultivated. We would stop dig them out and transplant them to the house area and wait for them ti hatch in the fall.

If we left them in the fields they were goners. We found them about 1/8 - 1/4 mile from the river in the sand if that helps.

I found some next to my driveway the other year. They were neat.

BTW I am going to hire you to follow the snappers around until they lay their eggs, because I'm not.... :lau

Congrats Sally!!

Mike hatched out first, but he is still a loser because I posted first @mlm Mike :tongue
:lau

is homeschool year round? kids get out next wed I think
depends on the family, really next week already??

I've been trying to determine the gender of my ducklings. But I'm pretty sure they're all female...

Also, I found a turtle.
Woohoo!!! Congrats!!

:hugs :hugs

Okay now that I've had time to sleep and refresh myself, time to post this....

100% normal results and echo was all clear! Say hello to Michael Ezra everyone!
CONGRATS!!! and hello Baby Michael Ezra!!

I hope its ok that i ask questions here. Yesterday was day 28 of my duck eggs and nothing happened. Humidity right now is between 70-75% and temp is usually around 100 because theyre on lockdown. Some of the eggs formed light gray splotches on them and im not sure what that means. I read it might be bacteria growing but i washed my hands every time i candled them so i dont know how that could happen. They dont smell, should i let them sit for another day or is it ok if i candle them? Im scared to open the incubator on lockdown and i dont hear peeping
Update? it could be a 'bruise on the shell from the duck tapping the shell, could be a bruise from it knicking a vein, could be nothing? what kind of ducks, shipped eggs or local??

You got a phony infraction...so you could see what it was like........That doesn't count. Even a canook should know that.....View attachment 1028355 View attachment 1028355 View attachment 1028355

I need to get my lawn ornament properly placed and secured in place before the WWD gets home from work...

If you never hear from me after today..You know she was not pleased and I am croaking away in some pond...
I cant wait to see it!

I WANT TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT AT AGE OF 70!

So cool! There is someone up the road from me that used to do this, his kids all do it and he used to teach people how to do it
if you want, i have lots of rocks!!

I'm really upset, I had 30-35 ish turkeys/silkies/chicks in a grow out pen, and even though they had a elevated house OFF the ground, only 2 chickens, and 5 turkeys were smart enough to use it. I had 8-10 die right off the bat, I was able to revive a couple chicks/turkeys, and the rest are under a heat lamp, trying to see if any of them are strong enough to live.

Why would they just drown themselves? Why wouldn't they go into the house we build for them, that was element proof?
:hugs sorry

The other D.....:oops::oops::oops::oops:
:duc

So moving on past pigeons (with or without the D).. I have to clean cages today. :barnie And I only have 5 eggs left in the cabinet bator and then I'm taking a break-I have a full house right now (literally!) My eval yesterday was a joke. I thought Bill was going to strangled the guy with the measuring tape. Have no idea how it went because he said "I can't tell you" when Bill asked about the measurement and temp results" He also walked out on me and said he would not look at pics of my hand because how did he know if that was my actual hand if my face wasn't in them???? He didn't even have the b*alls to tell us himself-has a tech come and tell us. :smack Poor lady looked embarrassed and afraid.
jerk  :hugs im glad Bill was able to go with you :hugs

So far, I've managed to save all but 1 I brought inside, and it's possible the "iffy" one may make it, too. We will see. It's always the favorites that seem to not want to make it. This is the one that always greeted me and liked to sit on my lap :(

The bigger ones that used the house, are in a dog crate with food and water, while the other ones are recovering under a heat lamp. I put most of them under the heat lamp about 4 inches from it to perk them up. Once they got too hot, they started to move around, so I moved the heatlamp back to an 18 inch position and put them in a pile in a brooder container until they recover enough to go in the dog crate.

The storm warning said all rain would stop by 7am... the rain started at 6am, and has been flooding, thundering and lightening and many people have been with out power on and off all night. We've lost power like 3x for a few minutes here and there.

****ing storms.

Pardon my language.
glad you were able to save most of them, hope your storm passed quickly with minimal damage :hugs

I love storms.
me too

I have to say I have the utmost respect for Dr's. I have a great "team" with my PCP and my new OT. Even my ortho is trying to help me. But comp's job is to find reasons to not pay for care. They do not like the diagnosis of RSD/CRPS because it is a chronic lifelong condition with no cure. It is also hard to diagnose since there is not one test that can absolutely verify it. A nerve block would help a lot, especially helping me with therapy so I am praying they will approve that and PT to help me get pain control and function back. Just like other professions, there are good docs and bad docs. I am happy that I have so many good ones looking out for me and a good husband, his family and my friends-especially my chicken peeps who have been so supportive :hugs
:hugs :hugs

We have in Hebrew 2 words to describe it
יום- "yom" the part of the day that have sun light
יממה- "ye -ma -ma"the combination of day AND night, a 24 ouers.
But in English the word "day" have the 2 meanings
AM I correct?
yes 2 menaings, the 24 hours OR the daylight hours

How much is a lot of money spent for eggs to be mailed to you? I have some eggs I could send you.....

Heat and cold take from the chances of a good hatch...... So many variables, blaming the Xray machine seems a little far fetched... Even though I mark all eggs I shp with a "do not xray" label, I doubt very much the postal employees pay much attention to the label..Other than to know it is a good box to play ball with....
LOL
agreed!

Cheater!! :lau

We candle because it is fun. Because the way an egg turns into a peeping fuzzy is amazing, and we want to watch it happen. Because it seems magical to watch that little swimming eyeball in there just sorta bounce back and forth, swimming in its ting little world. Because---I dunno, we just like to. :p
because we are female and we like babies  theyre fascinating

If you want to talk science, we should talk e2 levels and follicle sizes, and how there are NO STUDIES unrelated to IVF - and when I talked to a NP about my #'s, she goes "omg you hyperstimulated"
Again.
I'm a medical fking miracle. Go me.
NOT.

I hope you feel better soon.
:hugs sorry

When in a new thread...
But this seemed like a thread with possibly a more scientific slant. I figured you all would be more in tune. Thanks for your help.

Here found these, did not read them all

do ya'll have any ideas for a ruptured yolk sac? Hes doing well now, hes drinking the water and vitamins, the area where the yolk sac is, is pretty nasty. Should I clean it up? Or leave it?
welcome to the thread! glad you are getting help on another thread so i will just say :fl :fl

I've never had an infraction or a warning, what does it do? lol

Nothing, unless you get too many.

@duluthralphie I switched to my cabinet bator with staggered hatched. I have been so occupied with keeping up and dr visits I just did the 2 time a day turn with a semi automatic turner. checked the temp every so often and added some water for humidity when I remembered. only candled at the very end to double check. The result... a 50% better hatch rate than what I was getting! stronger, healthier chicks. :yesss: Waiting for the last few eggs to hatch and then shutting down for awhile to deal with my health and grow outs.:th
awesome!! congrats!!!

Trying to stay positive and praying they approve my nerve blocks. :fl I'll know within a week. If those don't work, the only other treatment are ketamine infusions and I know how you feel about ketamine :barnie . But my therapist thinks it is spreading up my arm, and shoulder and into my chest wall and part of my right hand so as soon as approval comes through I will start aggressive OT/PT and the nerve blocks with PMR docs and pain management/anesthesia. Long road ahead but looking for recovery and relief. :fl:hugs
:hugs i hope it comes through :fl :fl :hugs

I am not sure if and when I will be allowed to hatch again. I am not ready to reveal the why yet...Just know life vacuums here right now.......
:hugs

I gotta go feed the chooks and beepers and webbers.... before I get into trouble  be back later:frow
:love new pics??

Sort of. My baby might agree with you, she got bit by a duck yesterday because she stuck her finger through the fence right by their food. Apparently, her finger looked like a worm?

Also, my husbands earliest memory as a child, was being attacked by a duck when his parents were looking at their lake house they bought. It's why he was so anti ducks at first. His first memory. Duck hating. ! LOL
lol, Z? hope shes fine now

Bantty the beepers are no longer my babies anymore :hitThey have bonded to their mom and dad and hang with the big birds now. But they look so much happier :love I think I may have 2 whites and 1 buff!
:hugs sounds like its time to hatch more :lau

I thought we were already best friends banty!

:p

Speaking of which, do you need puppy pictures? because our puppies are a few weeks old now, and they howl if we leave them alone in the other room together. Seriously, I had puppies romping on my bed last night because they've decided they are people puppies.
i do!!!!

:love

They are nice to have around, but if you don't plan on riding them, can I suggest a donkey or something that likes to kill snakes and chase off predators? Donkey's are protective mean things and great guard-donkeys.
i love donkeys! theyre so cute!!

Well, I don't feel like socializing, but I wish you all well. I just lost my second doeling. I have never lost babies before. It is so sad.
Goodbye my beautiful Bree and Lyric

@kajira I hope your trigger worked out. :fl.
:hugs so sorry Dax :hugs

One good thing animal wise. New heifer 5/31. Oddly, she is not a baldy really. She is Angus Charolais. Go figure. My good cow has now had four heifers and no bull calves :confused:h
My friend calls her a herd builder as she has excellent lines and great heifers.
View attachment 1030183
thats great!!! Congrats on the new heifer :hugs

Ok, now I know where you are coming from.

I have a couple questions, is your goal just to candle eggs or to hatch healthy chicks?

If it is the later, which I hope it is, otherwise if you just like to candle candle every egg the chickens lay and never hatch any.. you would not have commented on the infertile eggs if hatching was not important.

So question number 2, Do you disinfect your eggs before placing them in the incubator?

#3 Do you wear sterile or at least clean latex gloves before touching the eggs or reaching into it?

Failure to do either of these can halt development or cause defective birds.

#4 Do you hatch in the same machine you incubate in? Do you ever have staggered hatches in it?

Same thing can happen here, you are asking for dead or disabled sickly chicks if you do this...

I am kind of a hatching nerd/addict. I hatch a fair share of birds in a year. Sometimes I might hatch more in a week than most do in a year or two. If you are candling because you need to find space and want to get rid of the bad eggs, I understand. I may not agree, but understand. Each time you open and even breath into let alone reach into or touch and egg you are opening a path for a pathogen to enter your flock/system.

Believe me I know they can come in on their own, so no sense opening the door for them and inviting them in.
i set dirty eggs, never wash my hands and candle whenever i feel like it
my hen doesnt wash her butt before she sits on them so i dont see the point in washing my hands

What? It was 85 yesterday here. I'm dying. Literally.
90 here yesterday.. I died ..was not just dying.

:hit it was only like 65 here yesterday!!! :hit
