EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

One good thing animal wise. New heifer 5/31. Oddly, she is not a baldy really. She is Angus Charolais. Go figure. My good cow has now had four heifers and no bull calves :confused:h
My friend calls her a herd builder as she has excellent lines and great heifers.

I made an offer??? Really? I seldom ever make an offer other than giving my great and expert opinion on everything....

I do not understand what you need to see inside an egg though. I am very anti-candling. I candle once on the day they move from the incubator to hatcher. I see no other reason to candle.

BTW what was the offer I made? I might want to retract it today, I am in a selfish mood and the offer might have been too generous for my current mood...

Ugh how boring NOT to candle. I almost lose desire to hatch, just buy chicks, then why bother... pullets... I suspect that if I didn't candle, I may just buy eggs in a supermarket.

Ok, now I know where you are coming from.

I have a couple questions, is your goal just to candle eggs or to hatch healthy chicks?

If it is the later, which I hope it is, otherwise if you just like to candle candle every egg the chickens lay and never hatch any.. you would not have commented on the infertile eggs if hatching was not important.

So question number 2, Do you disinfect your eggs before placing them in the incubator?

#3 Do you wear sterile or at least clean latex gloves before touching the eggs or reaching into it?

Failure to do either of these can halt development or cause defective birds.

#4 Do you hatch in the same machine you incubate in? Do you ever have staggered hatches in it?

Same thing can happen here, you are asking for dead or disabled sickly chicks if you do this...

I am kind of a hatching nerd/addict. I hatch a fair share of birds in a year. Sometimes I might hatch more in a week than most do in a year or two. If you are candling because you need to find space and want to get rid of the bad eggs, I understand. I may not agree, but understand. Each time you open and even breath into let alone reach into or touch and egg you are opening a path for a pathogen to enter your flock/system.

Believe me I know they can come in on their own, so no sense opening the door for them and inviting them in.

Well, I don't feel like socializing, but I wish you all well. I just lost my second doeling. I have never lost babies before. It is so sad.
Goodbye my beautiful Bree and Lyric

It's more fun than the actual hatch, for me.
What? It was 85 yesterday here. I'm dying. Literally.
You must live in some weird hot pocket.

I refuse to admit it's summer. I won't admit it. It's not hot.

Ralphie - her point was that she was dealing with shipped eggs, and in the past, when she has pulled clears, she would open them and see the bullseye (confirming that the person sold her fertile eggs). She had someone claiming that the X-rays would make the bullseye go away (so that if it wasn't there, not to claim the vendor sold her eggs that weren't fertile). She was kinda calling BS, looking for confirmation.

How are you doing?

@Fire Ant Farm I'll be up in SA on monday. Then, on my birthday, June 13th. Any chance you'd like to meet up for my birthday for lunch? I'm dragging the hubby along. ;)

I have a meeting at 1pm on the 13th, but if you want an early lunch so I can make it back, sure!

@meltel, @daxigait , @kajira and anyone I missed who needs them - :hugs
:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs

I slept obscenely late today - must have really needed to catch up on sleep. Which is all well and good, sleep is great, but I have stuff that needs to get done and now less time for it. So I'd better head out.
