I have noticed that starting at dry hatch 30% seems a bit too dry this season. I have been starting at 40% to allow a slower air cell development.

You are right that this egg being upside-down has a smaller air cell. That is definitely interesting. If there is no issue, would this be an option for porous eggs? To incubate air cell down for the first week?

That sounds like a very interesting idea! You may have something there. Our humidity's high at the moment, I almost have the opposite issue at the moment.

But incubating for the first week upside down would be a controllable way to incubate porous eggs with non porous eggs so they come in together at the right amount of air cell. I've had them in a container with a baggy loose over top. That would eliminate the extra fuss.

Incubating upside down increases malpositions. Also, keep in mind that each egg is different - this last series of hatches, I had eggs from two groups of chickens, and for whatever reason, one set lost weight SUPER fast compared to the others (they were very dark marans eggs, should have been SLOWER). Not porous, but (older) pullet eggs. It was so bad I had to move them to a separate incubator at around 8 days and do the rest of the incubation for them at 60%+ humidity (vs. 30% for the others). It's an extreme example, but it happens. (All but one hatched, happy ending.)

I weigh the eggs before setting, and when I candle, and I have a spreadsheet that helps me calculate the % weight lost vs. expected. Several of the ones that hatched had >20% weight loss.

Like me. Which is a good age to sit and have tea.

I was on my knees cleaning...I'm never doing that again. (Get me my cane! And heavy painkillers.)
