Don't look at me. I think it'sperfectly logical to set well into Sept and even hatch in early October. November is too late.

I'm setting a nice batch of eggs as soon as I match up each hen and get the roos breeding.

Youse crazy.

I don't like having to run electric outside and I don't like chicks indoors past 3 weeks of age... So I hatch in summer.

I set eggs on August two last year, and that was the batch that got the wicked bad foot frost bite. I don't know if you all remember Maple, but she was part of that batch and she lost some toes. Even today she can't flex the remaining ones.

Just the awkward time of year where heat seems a bit excessive yet cold snaps can near kill them.

I don't understand how any of your critters survive the temps you have!

Oh gosh, she's young. If it helps, no one could tell me anything either at that age. I turned out ok. (I think)

They're fine once they're all grown up and they have the body mass to keep warm. That particular pullet that nearly died was only with 3 other birds, which probably contributed. Mea culpa.

My family was worried that I was building a house and getting married...lol.

Ya I know. No-one could tell me anything either. That's what started this whole mess. . I married her dad!
I just was never a big risk taker. I just wanted to settle down and have a family of my own. She does stuff that could get her killed! And she's beautiful. . but she is not like me at all. She is into facial piercings tattoos scream o music and anything else I can't stand lol. I don't mind her not being like me that's fine. Everyone is different. But she is a creep magnet.

These chicks aren't for me...they're for someone else. Ok...maybe a few of Cynthia's are for me. I don't keep mine (usually) past 1 week in here. Little boogers start partying too hard. My chicks that hatched in Nov for the Halloween hatch survived the -30s cold front that came through in December. They were in the tractor shop with a light.

I wasn't a super risk taker either. I married a guy who has more common sense than I do. I scare everyone here. Maybe that's her m.o.

I find most of the scary people are actually nice people in disguise. It's their shields to protect them. It's "some" of the suits and ties that are evil incarnate.

And to think. . I bring my dogs inside when it gets below 0! I do it mostly so I don't have to go out and break water for them constantly.
