EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

4am yesterday we woke up to shattering glass. our neighbors who left town had thugs smash a bedroom window out. bob shoots his mossburg pump shot gun into the ground and they ran like roaches. sherrif says nothing they can do. bobby asked if they knew somone with a chainsaw while thwy crawled away thru the tree road block

Unbelievable :(

Oh my word, that is awful! You have my sympathies for everything you're going through right now. What a heartbreaking situation! :(

Glad you and Bob were there to protect both yours and neighbors property.

I think that 1/2 smoked pig will do the deal!

I have the hatch from hell. Power outages, surges, and still some eggs survived all that. We just started day 23 a few hours ago. One chicken hatched in the morning and is doing fine. The power was out so it was emergency. I handled it as best as I could. I thought the rest of the eggs died but 4 are (were) still alive 5 hours ago (candled, floated). 2 hours ago the light overheated and again I thought they died. 2 of them internally pipped and one is also chirping from time to time. Temp is stable now, I am sure the chirping one is still doing ok. How long is it between internal and external pip? While I want to have all hatched, the chirping one is special. It came from a dead pet hen and we would love to save the offspring since the hen was a favourite. I am trying to go with the flow and accept what I can't control, but I gave it my best shot to kerp the eggs warm and hatched the zipped egg with my own body heat and kept the incubator warm with my car idling and blasting hot air for hours. Power was out for 7 hours and out of the 6 eggs 1 died. So far against all odds there they are the 4 of them and I would like to know they will be ok.

I am happy when there are at least two that make it.
The ones that hatched sound like survivors. Make sure they are getting good chick starter and some chick saver in the water for the first three days. Usually if they make it for three days they will be fine. Watch for pasty butt and clean to make sure the vent is open.

In two to three weeks watch for coccidoisis.

the county got the power on for country club of ocala, around the corner from here. 3 million dollar homes. and we cant get anybody to clear the trees so we can drive to survive. i wish we would have bought a home on the golf course in the woods instead of a farm in the woods.

I hope they get things cleared and power back to you soon.

How horrible, glad you all were there to scare them off.
