For you it likely works because your chickens get access to the world of bugs, grubs and seeds to supplement the feed. That gives them a complete diet to cover the nutrients lost by fermenting. You may also give them some scratch too.I have one flock of mine.... who was started on FF on day one.
I have kept track of pretty much everything for this flock since day one..including daily egg numbers.
Come January...I will be publishing my own report. (January because that is the month they first started to lay.)
I now feed everyone only FF.
No way in the world I would ever even buy a bag of scratch...just so you know. For you it likely works because your chickens get access to the world of bugs, grubs and seeds to supplement the feed. The big problem would be if they were not eating anything but fermented feed. Commercial egg batteries and such would be an example of a place where the chickens do not have access to free ranging.
What I like to say is to do what works for you. The problem I have seen is a bit of a nearly religious ferver over things like this--demeaning people on both sides of the issue and not paying attention to the research on the subject. The change to the feed by fermenting causes some good things but there are also some bad.
BTW, the study you are doing has many constraining variables. Validity would be low but it is still interesting. It could be part of a bigger study
