EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

@Pensmaster How did your hatch come out?
You remember those free cages I got from Culligan that they were going to throw away, I tore one of the two blue ones apart and then had the side of one welded on the other so it had four sides and added angle supports. Now all I need is to put the welded wire around the outside and put on a door. What do you think?

Awesome. My fencing is still waiting for friend to deliver the rest of free dirt for leveling.
The hatch is still going two yesterday and two last night. I think there are three eggs left to hatch but I might have added some blue eggs from my neighbor. :hide

I was loud and repetitive about the abuse. "Sturgis! You got that poor dog beaten!" "Sturgis, you're lucky I don't abuse you like that!" "Stop barking! You're going to get that dog in trouble again!"
Good for you! :hugs

It's rude and stupid to stand up for myself. I don't usually care if I get hurt defending others.
Why on Earth is it rude & stupid to stand up for yourself? I can "sorta" understand if you're afraid of repercussions, but why rude???

okay - the whole story comes out - Teenager refused to look for the missing chicken last night because he was feeling lazy, and it died by morning :(

Everytime he fails to put a chicken away, something usually gets them if they are out alone. In a large group with roosters, no one bugs them. Our sheep dog usually sleeps near the pens and goats. She doesn't go near the edge of the fences where it was killed this morning. She brought it back up to the house for us to find, but it was a huge cochin hen. It was killed a few hours ago, so early morning the time when they wake up and would start looking for bugs in the early AM before the other birds were left out. :(

I wish he couldn't be so irresponsible. He likes the birds, but won't spend the extra 5 minutes doing a head count before calling it good.

I rested yesterday a lot - and slept in this morning - something's been picking off our chickens 1 at a time - something our great pyr can't get ahold of - they usually do it at dusk, but today killed one, right by our front gate. A full sized chicken - one of our big ones. I don't think the dogs did it - the dogs were on the back of the yard and when I heard the scuffle, the dogs came running up barking at whatever it was and chased it off.

They aren't eating them - hubby thinks it might be roosters attacking things, or a turkey killing another chicken... but i'm watching the birds and they all co-exist peacefully, so if they are killing each other, I haven't seen signs of it, either.

Nothing eaten and just killed is either something in the weasel family (that could evade dogs) or dog or cat.
I've lost birds lately that chose to sleep in trees.

We usually talk health, the cause of global warming and weather but since the start of this thread is incubating, I'll report that I have eggs opening like popcorn. I don't know how many but I had 1 hatch under a broody hen that got herself killed because she couldn't get the chick to go in at night. She was eaten but the chick escaped. 3 more eggs hatched 2 days later so it has friends. Another egg she was sitting on hatched 2 days ago and now about 30 eggs are hatching.
I have to clean a building out for them.
