EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Always add sugar or salt to lye water, preferably while it's warm but not freshly mixed. I always use sea salt but as long as it's not fortified with iodine you can really use any kind of salt. If using clay as a hardener that gets added at trace or (in HP soap) at vaseline stage.

Incidentally I'm at work on a spa soap with Dead Sea clay and salt with spirulina. It'll be a hot process soap and I'm really excited to see how it goes.
oh so not both at the same time how much salt PPO
your awesome!! it will be lovely!! you have to add EO to that one?

    Hi,
I'm really hoping you can help. I'm doing my first assisted hatch with a light Sussex. He was stuck in the pipping stage for 12 hours and was starting to tan around the hole, so I zipped for him and gave him 4 hours to show any sign of him trying to get out but couldn't see any sign he was trying. He has been talking but seems to be slowing down. So I have capped him 7 hours ago (taking the shell and first membrane) and have been dampening the inner membrane every two hours. Im just uncertain on how to tell if all the blood has receded and if I can take off the inner membrane so he can wiggle out in his own time.
The clear membrane is where I have dampened and the white is where I have yet to dampen.
Really hoping you can help me. Thank you for your time,
    Chloe.

EDIT to add this was a paste as example
  3. " Nope this one still needs a little time! LET THOSE veins go to thin lines! "

see how tiny the veins are in a healthy hatch below....

She is READY WHEN she has absorbed all that blood check the position of the beak and ease the membrane away by stretching rather than tearing if possible. If no bleeding occurs continue to gradually ease the membrane from the beak towards the sides of the shell and I sorta of stick them OVER the shell and they stick to it, as if putting a trash bag in a trash can. Continue until the chick is exposed by dampening the membrane, I use a tweezers with a flat tip (not pointed). If the membrane is sticking to the chick just keep dampening and use a clean damp paper towel and wipe gently with the feathers and it will come off.

Now that you have the membrane pulled off the top of the chick wet along the outer shell membrane 1 more time & PUT THE CHICK BACK IN THE BATOR!
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PULL OR TILT the chick out of its shell!!
LET the chick do that part when it’s ready!!!

Thank you! I can see the difference now. Even just two hours after I messaged the membrane looks like the natural hatch membrane but one side still has a big vessel so when that has receded i will be confident I can pull it away from his head and let him come out when he is ready.
    Thank you again!

I add one teaspoon of either sugar or salt per two pounds of oil just because I've always had issues with higher concentrations. Looking it up now I'm finding a lot of soap makers stating that the ideal ratio is 1/2 tsp per pound, which fits with my experience!

Not sure if I want fragrances for that soap yet! I'm thinking if I do it'll be something really spalike like peppermint and eucalyptus. I'm planning on only doing a small batch for this though, as personal use. Six bars of that and six bars of a tallow/coconut oil combo with citrus EOs added. If I like the recipes enough I might release them for sale in the summer.

That's probably it, they should start again soon.

I wonder about that, you would think they would roost in the same place every night, yet every evening I hear all this discussion from the chickens about where they are roosting.

:frow No trick or treaters here ever either.

Good luck!

Hello Dax! :frow

Silly mike, Belgium doesn't have Thanksgiving. But we do have St. Nicholas Day and Krampusnacht.

The one doe I just acquired had quads this last spring and triplets the year before. I will be happy with twins, but I would love more. If I get triplets the money from one kid goes to buying a goat for a family in India. I am hopeful that He blessed me so I can pass it on.
really? how do you achieve that? buying the goat in India?

thank you sooooooo much!!! Euc and spearmint!!! I love that smell!!!

How is the chicken market where you are? It is slow here. I had planned to move half a dozen heads or so to get them out of the way before winter, but they are not selling. Interestingly the cock did.

Where I'm at? I have no idea, I've never actively tried to sell chickens. I've had people randomly stop by. Also, there is a poultry auction at the Wednesday Auction, I've never really have checked it out though.
