EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

How long should hatching eggs be sitting out on my counter before I ship them? If I sold a dozen and am only getting 4 eggs a day, I would have to wait 3 days to ship them so I could get a full dozen. Which means a lot of the eggs would be sitting out a couple of days. Is that ok?
It might be okay, but the fresher the better. When they have sat out for a few days the air cells start developing and are then much more prone to damage. 2 days old is really the max that's a good idea. Day of is best but that's tough to do with 4 eggs per day, lol.

You guys are being quiet, so I’m going to tell you about Duckling.
I’ve had a marble tic-tac-toe game for about twenty years. Last night, we started playing. Today I realized that cereal makes good game pieces.

She won for real (notice I blocked her diagonally), then ate her pieces.

We both fell asleep really early last night. No one was w/her to assist. Usually we sit we her and collect them/clean them & place them in a tub until the sow has completed labor.
So 2 fatalities with this litter.. :tongue

That's so cute! :love

My littles liked playing Candyland with candy pieces instead of the original ones.(which many somehow got lost) The winner & loser both ate their piece at the end of game. Perhaps that's how we lost the ones that game with the box!

The kids are older now & love to play Sequence. (a strategy game like a combo of Connect 4 and cards.) Recently DD & I were trying to play while holding chickens. For some reason Bubbles was squirmy & kept trying to get at the cards...... then I remembered that DD used her for a training experiment. The poor hen was only trying to get at the Q of hearts so she could get her treat.

Nice looking piglets. Congratulations.
Sometimes we had as many as 10 farrowing at a time, so we never assisted. Sometimes we weren't even on the farm which was about 100 miles south of home. Occasionally we'd lose a few but they were basically on their own. One of our neighbors had fancy automated (for ancient times) octagonal farrowing houses. Another neighbor ran all his hogs free ranging in the woods with no human intervention. He averaged just about 0.8 fewer weaned piglets per litter than the guy that had spent the 10s of thousands for the houses.
One of my jobs from the time I was about 9 or 10 was castration of all the males. It made my dad nauseous so he couldn't do it. Imagine an old pig/poultry farmer getting sick at the sight of minor surgery.

While watching the video, Duckling came over to me. The dog took the opportunity to eat Duckling’s lunch. :D
