EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I did not say don't monitor what kids do - good grief no quite the opposite. My kids got A LOT of "guidance" believe me BUT I would not consider putting limits on Internet access and checking accessed sites is any form of satisfactory parental supervision.
It the easy way out - like parking a toddler infront of a TV 18 hours a day instead of playing games or reading with them.
Nothing beats being there and teaching them what is appropriate so that when they do leave home they are well used to making good choices, AND being responsible for them.
Well unless your with them 24/7 anytime they have internet access. . you will never know where they have been on the web or who they might be talking to without checking history or having some sort of parental controls set up. Just my opinion. I'm not suggesting limits and checking usage as an alternative to guidance. .. Just as a follow up to make sure they are being safe and following the guidance given.

Freezing rain a couple days ago froze the front pop door to the coop in it's track & I hadn't been able to work it loose w/o tearing it up, so I opened the back door so they could get out & free range, and get into the run for feed & water. Stayed that way for 2 days, with everyone entering & exiting through the back door, and going to roost normally.
Today I finally got the door unstuck after I'd let everyone out the back, so I closed the back door , opened the front, & set the ramp in place; everything back to normal, or so I thought. I bowl on Tuesday nights, so I generally don't let the birds range on Tuesdays...they'd still be loose when I had to leave. The run & coop would still be open, so they could go to roost, but they wouldn't be locked up 'til I get home about 9. This morning was different; they were all loose before I got the door fixed, & didn't all return before I left. I went to lock up when I got home, and my rooster is MIA. No sign of him in the trees or near the coop or run. It was dark enough when I locked up last night that I couldn't swear that he was accounted for then, either.
I guess daylight tomorrow will tell the tale.

If you ever stop learning, then's the time to say goodbye and go canoe gracefully over a waterfall. Still, if knowledge were able to be qualified, you'd be head and shoulders above many---that much I am certain of.
I've taken my 'Old Towne' over a few waterfalls.

A side note: I do not look at any 'backyard' pages, and I imagine they would be filled with the same urban chicken excrement I see on blogs all over the Internet.

Don't mind me. I am a tad cranky today.
If it makes you feel any better, the Blues got destroyed at home tonight. It was 6-1 Wild by the end of the second period. 6-2 was the final.
Not all backyard people are all bad. I'm co-organizer of a 700 member backyard chicken meetup group.

:fl he'll return in the morning. Sometimes they're really hard to see in the trees at night.
Raccoons are in a semi-hibernation routine now. Just don't do the same thing in April or May. May has always been my worst month. The Kestrels and Barred Owls have been hanging around here more than normal lately.
When I have to leave for pool before it gets dark, my wife locks up for me - believe it or not. Not always perfectly but she hasn't been the cause of losing birds yet.

I hope he shows up!
So do I, Jess; Thanks
Was just out to open the coop; no sign of him or of any disturbance. He should have been sounding off for two hours already; not a peep.

I'm not holding my breath. At this point, I'd be surprised if he shows up. In all the time he's been here, he's never spent a night that he wasn't locked up, 'til now. Matter of fact, he's always hanging around the run, making sure the girls all get in.

Whatcha got in the way of a replacement? Anything ready to go?

Waterfalls in the kiddie pool don't count. :p

Goodness, no. I am a backyard chicken owner; I am on backyardchickens.com. I don't harbour any grudge towards us, but I do get tired of the self proclaimed urban experts that have owned exactly eight chickens and think DE is a miracle on wheels.

I feel a tad better. Now only if it was the habs doing the destroying.

Aww, poor Tucker :( Unfortunately, it happens. Right now, I don't have much available. I lost one of my hens, a couple weeks ago, I'm guessing egg bound, and the other hasn't been giving me eggs in weeks BUT at least 5 of the 6 babies that hatched on New Years Day look to be boys so I should have one available in a few weeks, minimum. Their father will be available later on, once the babies come of breeding age but that's quite a while to wait.
