Bestie!! :hugs
Hi everyone! :frow Look at me popping in again. :highfive:

Anyone have experience with herding dogs? I adopted a mystery mutt little puppers a couple of weeks ago. She’s 10wks old now and herding my ducks and guineas. I’d like to channel these instincts but my dog experience is basically limited to labs that are lazy housepups.

Mike's your man; right down his alley, soon as I remember his username.

Yeah, @mim Mike...thank you, Abi

Yes, I take herding lessons with my dogs. (Icelandic sheepdogs).

At what age do you start a dog? And I’m reading that basic obedience is the first step? The closest club that I’ve found is 2.5 hours away, and they didn’t respond to my messages. There’s another club even farther in north Louisiana and they assess a pup’s instincts for free. I’m looking at east Texas now but mostly finding places where you send the dog off and it comes back trained, like duck dog school.

Here’s her video, because I think she’s just the best little thing since sliced bread. :love I felt exactly like that farmer in Babe.

For two weeks I’ve been watching her and correcting her when she gets close to birds or looks “too interested” because I’m used to big dumb labs trying to retrieve everything. Herding and hunting look too similar to me, at this point. She also used to bark a lot more, but we fuss at her for that, too. Our older dog is a lab/weimaraner so she’s basically a ghost, and we got spoiled to that. :hide

Josie is pretty big for 10wks. Her mama is 45lbs, same as my dog, but Josie is already way bigger. The rescue has the mom listed as an Australian Shepherd mix.

I spent a couple weeks worrying that Josie was a pit mix, but now I’m thinking it’s cur. Catahoulas are super popular around here for hog hunting, but apparently they are also ranch/stock dogs.
