At what age do you start a dog? And I’m reading that basic obedience is the first step? The closest club that I’ve found is 2.5 hours away, and they didn’t respond to my messages. There’s another club even farther in north Louisiana and they assess a pup’s instincts for free. I’m looking at east Texas now but mostly finding places where you send the dog off and it comes back trained, like duck dog school.
Here’s her video, because I think she’s just the best little thing since sliced bread.I felt exactly like that farmer in Babe.
For two weeks I’ve been watching her and correcting her when she gets close to birds or looks “too interested” because I’m used to big dumb labs trying to retrieve everything. Herding and hunting look too similar to me, at this point. She also used to bark a lot more, but we fuss at her for that, too. Our older dog is a lab/weimaraner so she’s basically a ghost, and we got spoiled to that.
Josie is pretty big for 10wks. Her mama is 45lbs, same as my dog, but Josie is already way bigger. The rescue has the mom listed as an Australian Shepherd mix.

I spent a couple weeks worrying that Josie was a pit mix, but now I’m thinking it’s cur. Catahoulas are super popular around here for hog hunting, but apparently they are also ranch/stock dogs.

Certainly looks like the instinct is there.
Where I go they start at 6 months, then when the pups go through their secondary fear stage the like to give them a break, don't remember what age that is.
Yes, basic obedience , good recalls and good waits. My dogs bark, it's a breed trait, I'm not going to fight over a thousands years of breeding.
I'm not certain about sending a dog off to be trained, the training I do is for me, the dogs have the instinct. I have to learn to guide that instinct. You control the dog, and the dog controls the livestock. You can't control the dog until you allow the dog to control the livestock. That's what I was taught anyways.
Next Saturday I can ask Jerry, my instructor, if he knows anyone down your way. I know where I go people from other states come to attend their clinics. If people want regular lessons they usually can direct them to people closer to them There's a big difference in having the facilities and number of sheep to hold trials and clinics and being able to give herding lessons.
Herding and hunting do look very similar, herding is hunting with the kill instinct removed. The dogs will nip and come away with a mouth full of wool when they need too. There's been a few times when I thought I just bought a sheep.![]()
I’ll start with basic obedience then. I guess I’m afraid that if I don’t immediately nurture this herding that it will either get out of hand, or disappear. 3-4 months feels like so long to wait!

I don’t really have a need for a herding dog, but it could be fun! I’m trying to find something local because DH didn’t really want a pup, and he’s pretty sick of my expensive and all-consuming hobbies.![]()

Do you use them for your goats or you also have sheep?

Thanks, Abi. I'll take a look; Staples <10 miles from here.I suggest anything from Staples for $300-500 with the exception of the one with -1 stars.![]()
Free delivery if you order one not in the local store, and I think pick up in an hour. Of course, that includes free help when the stupid thing is being a pain. Thanks, Abi. I'll take a look; Staples <10 miles from here.
