EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Very informative...thanks
I'd say the odds that these panels do contain asbestos or fiberglass, given their estimated age. If they do, and haven't caused a problem in the 45 years we've lived with them, chances are they won't in the next 20 years. After that.....
Somewhat agree I sprayed the stuff for 3 years. Lungs are ok. Do have couple spots on one lung.
Would definitely say they have asbestos.

I haven't been around in three or four years, I still recognize some names. I didn't post enough for you guys to remember me, but I enjoyed following everyone. I stopped hatching and everything to do with chickens for three or so years. Now I am back at the old family farm and ready to start back up. I am going to try to rehab an old shed in the back....it is 10' by 16'. It's sinking in the back and needs jacked up, the doors need replaced as well as about half of the front part of the floor. It doesn't have windows...the only good thing is the roof is not leaking. Wondering if I would be better off starting from scracth? Since the weather is so muddy and nasty, I have thought about hatching just for the fun of it. I hatched in my studio apartment (hence my name) a few times and the chicks were always easy to sell pretty quick. As for the chickens I would like to keep again, I've always had good luck with the buff orps. Now I just need to find someone to help me jack up this old barn! Kids these days balk at getting dirty :barnie
Welcome back :frow

Small world. I've never been there. I'd like to go see where he was born, but it probably doesnt exist any longer...130 years ago.
I don't know if much is left from that long ago. There's a really old schoolhouse that they've preserved but even that is probably more my grandmother's time which is younger than your grandfather's..

I could check .

I found a hatchery an hour away from me that you can buy hatching eggs from, only on Tuesdays by appointment only. You can't choose want breeds you want, but they are only seven dollars a dozen! I just might make an appointment for the Tuesday and get about three dozen. It would keep me busy for a few weeks while I plan out this new coop. My only worry would be selling the day old chicks, I have always hatched silkies or EEs in the past, the chicks always sold fast. Not sure how surprise chicks would sell:hmm
:frow
Good luck. I guess it depends on where you are. In March most would go well, I don't know about February.

Tell ya what...next time you're up there & happen to have a camera along, snap a couple pictures if you can; I'd be interested in seeing it. It's possible Grandpa went to that same school. 'Course, he only went as far as 4th grade. Maybe see if there's a plaque that gives the date it was built? Don't be going out of your way, but it'd be interesting.
