EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Quote: If it's like my Janoel or my Janoel knockoff, it just has a humidity sensor.

I must be missing something here. I'm just going to sit here quietly and see what the rest of you come up with.

I have no idea honestly, but I bought a meter that someone here recommended that should arrive tomorrow. I will use it to test the room as well as the incubator I plan to hatch them in since there's no monitor for it in the smaller one.  I've never thought it was too humid in that room, they are in our bedroom. I guess I will find out tomorrow!

Is there moisture on the windows the room

Hey y'all, I have a pretty sick chicken that I'm determined to save, we just lost another to the same symptoms and I want to figure this out before we lose any more. Already started a couple threads but I was told to ask the questions here so I'll just post the links.
If y'all know anything about Tylan 50 med interactions, praziquantel, or something I'm missing out of all of this please let me know. I'm not sure she has much longer.

I am jealous that you have trash pick-up. I have to haul everything off a couple miles down the road.
That would be a bummer. I've always had the pleasure of trash pickup except at the farm. We just didn't generate much we couldn't reuse or recycle there.

The city of St. Louis always had free trash service. It was a real revelation to move to the county where one actually had to pay for the service.
Once they expanded the array of materials they'll accept for recycling, our trash can hardly has anything in it and the huge recycle cart is always full. Glass, aluminum, steel, paper of all kinds, all but one type of plastic.
Originally they wouldn't take anything but aluminum, clear glass and plain paper (not the slick ad stuff).

yesterday I stripped the bark off another black locust post, I have the hole dug, so planting the post and starting on another hole

thinking about chickens and diet as I age, seems easy to exist on eggs like the old lady I read about in Italy, Daxi (I think it was her)mentioned buying cooked chicken and just raising laying chickens..............
Eggs are one of the most complete foods. Contain most of the vitamins and minerals and amino acids one needs.

Here's a story I read about that woman. After being diagnosed with anemia at the age of 20, her doctor prescribed raw eggs every day. She has eaten over 100,000 eggs in her life.

Yes but not standing water. A few drops but mostly moisture on the walls.
Another option is to open the incubator for about a half hour each day to let the humidity dissipate. That will simulate a hen getting off the nest daily.

The ones that have not started are my Heritage RIR and my lone female Ameraucana. I am unfamiliar with when they start, but at thirty and thirty one plus weeks, it is getting ridiculous.
I have 5 pullets that are at 27 and 22 weeks. The older ones look close but I want to get them into their permanent housing before they start so they don't start laying in indiscriminate places. I'm behind on all my tasks.

It's so warm outside! Duckling and I put away summer stuff outside. Well, I put it away while she pulled it out to play with it.

Now the summer clothes are away inside, the summer toys are away outside. Acorns are collected, mud tracked through the house. It's an awesome day with my adorable Duckling!
We're setting another record today. Normal high for the day is 64 but it was already 73 at 8AM and only 7 degrees from the record. We should blow that one out of the water.

When you lose a bird and have others with the same symptoms, it is time to quit guessing and get some lab work so you know how to treat or even if it is something treatable. You have poultry labs all over the state.
Send the bird for a necropsy, histopathology and lab tests to save the rest if possible.

I used to try and haul the trash off in my car as soon as a bag filled up. I finally gave up and bought an old farm truck. I recently discovered that leaving trash in the back of the truck overnight is not a good idea though!

raccoons?

I just had the trash company replace our can cause their truck with the automatic jaws that grab the can poked a big hole in the front. Raccoons were going in to feast every night.
That may have saved a chicken or two.
