EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I plan to build a few brooder boxes..... right now my main brooder is full and it's way too cold to pitch those 4 week old babies outside......even with a heater..... now I just have to convince the hubby. He is currently under the impression that tubs are fine.... for now.

I use the big 50+ gallon Rubbermaid tubs (22”x42”) for the first week and then they go into 4’x6’ brooder boxes. Also have a few stock tanks I brood in as well. From there they go to grow out pens if I’m keeping them. Grow out pens are 6’x12’ inside with a 6’x24’ outside run. I keep them locked inside until they are big enough to go out in the run.

We all do our own thing, but you really could have them out with a lamp from the start. :hugs I know, they are our babies.

It’s Groundhog Day, and I had to google the results.

I love NJ, but we/they don’t need a Groundhog. Phil has been doing it for years, and Jersey is close by. It’s just overkill.

So here’s my cartoons. One for Jersey, and one I assume will be relevant in a week or two.

My morning started very stressful, but things are settled down now.
The dog is outside, rolling in poop. :D I guess it’s bath time.

The chicks were screaming, and I didn’t know why. Then I gave them wet mash. They were so afraid of the foil pan, they went crazier. :he I finally put some in their feeder, and a few minutes later, the feeder and the pan were full of chicks.
While dealing with that, the dog was jumping on me. Painful and stressful.
I have heat again, but now I am overwhelmed with “how?!” and deciding what I want to do now that I’m warm enough to do it.
The animals are satisfied (and poopy  ) now, so I’m relaxed.
Have a productive day, everyone!

Turned out to be a halfassed decent day. Got hydrants set on the newest well that was dug 3 months ago. LOL. Just came in from cleaning and disinfecting hatchers, cleaning and disinfecting the brooders I cleared today, taking care of all the chicks for the night and started a few more racks of chicken eggs. The racks I started are out of the big free range flock that has anything and everything thrown in there. These are my absolute favorite chicks to hatch. Get some awesome colored mixes and fantastic layers. Time to chill out for awhile.

I managed to get the back door on the coop. That was it.

Yeah around here I find that if I get groggy and put them outside too early I end up loosing more than I want to...... nothing worse than putting 2 months into a baby and then finding it dead at the bottom of a doggie pile....... sigh.
