I am glad you didn't lose any to that predator.I had a long busy day yesterday. But about 10 minutes of it were most eventful.
Our mail carrier had his last day on the job after 33 years. I got him a card, gift card and a dozen of my eggs. As I was walking down the driveway to meet him, all of a sudden I heard all the chickens going crazy. I ran back there to find a huge coyote running amok. It was really beautiful and looked more like a gray wolf than coyote but we don't have wolves. Perhaps it was a coydog hybrid. It didn't get any because the birds are too alert and fast. However I have lost a couple roosters to coyotes in the last year. It has me revisiting how I can manage to put electric fencing in.
When I'm in my house I can't hear anything going on outside unless all the windows are open, even with 20 roosters crowing. I do have a baby monitor in the brooder house that worked well for a few years but it seems to have lost some of its range so maybe it is time for me to reinvest in surveillance.
This coyote intrusion was at 2 in the afternoon.
I also returned a bag of Fertrell Poultry Nutri Balancer to the grain elevator. When I bought it I didn't decipher the lot number. When I got home, I called Fertrell and it was 2 years old.Manufactured January 5, 2018. It is 60 miles one way from my house. I was worried about getting home in time to lock up before dark with the memory of the coyote weighing on me.
They didn't balk about refunding my $64 but they claimed it must have come old from Fertrell. But the nutritionist at Fertrell said they got new computers in June 2018 and had not shipped to this outlet since that time. When I told them that, they then claimed that Fertrell told them it doesn't expire or go bad. Fertrell says it is only good for 6 months before there is significant vitamin loss.
There's your sign that feed store employees (at least any I've met) know nothing about animal nutrition.
I'm trying to decide if I want to give them a review so others will know to check mill dates. Right now they have a 4.7 star rating.
Let it just be a warning to others to always verify expiration and mill dates on poultry and other products. The closest feed mill to my house will keep feed and other product till it sells - veritably preying on the unsuspecting customer.
I almost bought vitamins from my local feed store. On the way to the counter, I noticed they had expired 2 years earlier and I told the clerk. They were still on the shelf over a year later.
The only thing I buy there is straw, pine shavings, seed and layer feed in a pinch because they do go through a fair amount of layer.
Now that I think about it, I don't think I'll be buying seed any more. No reason to believe it is any fresher. I have noticed that the straw appears old. The stalks are very broken down like they've been stored for years.
would we have a reason?Hi y'all,I'm hoping anyone is still not mad at me.
It would be about 3 years ago.when I first joined.would we have a reason?
