I also have a mic stand to use when I mark aircells, its alot easier with it to hold egg in one hand and write with other, not bothering with holding flashlight.

What I use after hatching so many marans, I needed a good one!
its a 3000 lums/lumens I researched to find the brightest I could get in the most handy as well as cheap! I have bought up to 1500 lums and couldnt see into dark blue eggs, now they look like I am candling a duck egg, very quick fast and done. Love it!
Well worth the money spent and the rechargeable batteries rock!

After viewing Sally's mic stand candler and seeing the proper way to candle, we rigged up a flashlight to a music stand. This is a 320 lumen light with the lens removed so it makes a good seal.

A
BCM egg at day 7 (all the pics are day 7). Lights not strong enough to see veins, but we know there is a chick.
I got a new little flashlight for candling but wanted a softer cushion and a way to create less gapping between the egg and the end of the flashlight.

I was trying to think of what I had on hand that could work - weather stripping! It's cushiony (yes, that's a word lol) and sticky on one side, so easy to apply & work with - however, I decided I wanted to secure mine better with super glue once I had it in place.

So I super glued the weather stripping around the end of the flashlight and voila! A perfect cushion and great seal on the egg for candling! Even if you don't have weather stripping on hand, it's super cheap and easy to pick up!

Here is my candler. I used a piece of a blue pool noodle and some electrical tape. The foam part os great. My husband is letting me borrow his flashlight, he is kinda a flashlight hoarder IMO, so my foam part is removable. I could us a stonger light but the cover is cheap, awesome and temporary.

Always wash hands before handling eggs.
The shell of an egg is thin and opaque when held near a bright light. The easiest type of egg to candle is the white shelled egg and some of the hardest eggs to candle are dark brown eggs, like the Maran eggs pictured below.

You could try two or more flashlights to see into them!

How about pictures of someone candling a dark egg with two candlers?

-Kathy

I'm trying to find pics of them as keets but not having any luck. One was twice as big as the other three and had distinctly different wattles. He's still the biggest. He ran with two smaller ones that had mostly straight down wattles. The fourth one they were always trying to kill, so I assumed I had a trio and a less dominant MALE that was causing issues. They seriously hated him and very truly attempted to kill him often. Does that dynamic make any sort of sense for a quad of males? Guineas are so weird.

Anyway, so recently one started roosting with the chickens. I thought it was the "hen" but this morning I realized it's actually the bigger of them. Not sure what he's doing in there because there are 3 mature roos and 3 juvies in there also. The smaller guinea is roosting all alone outside the kitchen window.

UPDATES ANYONE???? @BantyChooks can you update the old link with this new post for this in notes please?

HYGROMETER &
THERMOMETER SUGGESTIONS.......

you may want to pick up a hygro/thermo that has a high low temp reading on it as well...
that way you can see what it swings to at night.

READ what the accuracy is on the one you want to purchase FIRST (example: Accuracy to ±0.9°F (±0.5°C))

I haven't used a hygrometer in a long time. I weigh the eggs periodically as an alternative.
Sally I like the accurite from Walmart. It's about $8 and has 24-hr hi-lo and is pretty accurate. I have 3-4 of them because they're free standing and I like them. And easy to calibrate, but I don't think they can be adjusted.

The Egg-O-Meter has a sensor that is embedded in a synthetic egg which closely reflects the temperature of a real egg.
