EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

The 4H chapter is a good idea.

I'm actually planning on buying from someone at our local vet school. Just want to make sure I choose the best breed for us. I am leaning towards Nigerian Dwarfs.

oh MC!!!!!!

Wow can't believe the other thread got so busy (Ok for realz shouldn't be that suprised on BYC!!!). I candled my 14 eggs the past few days- my 2 "control"/mixed from my flock eggs have veining. Out of the 12 that were shipped to me (6 Salmon Fav's, 6 BCM) I can see veining in some of the BCM but others are too dark, and 4/6 SF's. One of the SF's is definitely dead- had a massively detached air cell and I think is basically scrambled on the inside. One of the others is questionable. I left both of them in because they were quite dear to get and I'd rather just leave them as long as they are not stinking. Also, one of the SFs that had a small crack that I sealed with clear nail polish definitely has a happy embryo moving around.

14ish more days to go. Some of them have saddle air cells. I'm thinking about stopping turning a bit early. I think all of the other air cells have re-attached- I was suspicious about a few that seemed to move a bunch when they arrived but have now stabilized (abnormally shaped but at least they are not moving).

This is the first time I've incubated eggs that were light enough to really see the little buggers!! It was crazy to see the embryo move in response to my flashlight!
oh I hope they do well for you!!!! did you try your flashlight ap on cell to see in marans?

Phage is in de house!!!

My pygmy that's due in a few weeks, should be bred with a nigerian dwarf stud. It will be my first experience with them too. I know I like the Boer's, the hand-raised males are pretty nice... compared to the nubian males at least. The nubian males were trouble makers compared to the more "relaxed" personality of the boer stud(s) I've met.

But, my husband didn't want 100+ lbs meat goats running all over our property, so we settled for smaller goats. I only have 1 full sized goat, and my billy can't seem to get the job done correctly on knocking her up. (and not for lack of trying.)

I would like to.... except.... around these parts, you don't go down someone's driveway unless you are invited.

They don't even have a phone number posted outside to call. But, I think I found their phone number posted on the board at TSC.
great!

I got an e-mail from world poultry about turning eggs. The first article was about the importance of turning during long term storage.
Turning 4 times a day during storage is recommended for eggs stored for an extended period. Little impact was seen in fresh eggs.
The impact was most dramatic in older flocks. There was little impact in young flocks of about 30 weeks of age.

Morning everyone!

I just got a call from my post office. She thinks all my goose eggs are broken. :( Gonna have to get refunded on ebay, I guess. She's bringing me the box, but told me it doesn't look promising.

@kajira when she brings the box, take pics of it unopened, and as you open it

the POST OFFICE will have to reimburse the shipper(i think) for damage up to $50 unless they purchased additional insurance but i believe all have $50 on them

The PDFs dont open, they wont open directly from the links either.... Uh oh.
