You're Just trying to level one side of a stick right? It would work for that. Could also use a wood rasp to get yourself started and then use that hand planer to get a smoother surface. Either way you'll need to secure the stick in place when using the tools or it will just be a pain. Personally I would just use a machete but thats because I'm more comfortable with one of them.
