It has to do with the black gene I believe.

is it a gene you don't want to breed? I'm just trying to figure out with my new silkies which ones are showing flaws that I dont want, or if it's normal for some things.

I know my partridge isn't breed standard. non black feet, and only 4 toes... so he's going to be... replaced.

No clue if it's a gene you don't want to breed. I think there was something about it in the Halloween HAL thread a couple days ago.

Any ideas why my black silkie doesn't have feathers on his back? he has these little stick like pokey needles instead of feathers?  As a day old hatchling.

Pictures? Needle like things are probably feathers. Was this of the hatch that one was late

no. they were born on day 18-19 because my son nuked them at 104 early in the incubation. Killed off most of the eggs. so the 5 that lived, 4 hatched, 1 needed an assist.

1 had 4 toes and no black feet - but otherwise looks like a silkie - I did some gene research and I don't want the partridge in my breeding program, so i'll either cull, or get rid of it.

The rest are really nice looking so far, except the black one has needle-like sticks instead of soft fluff. I also wondered if it had been mixed with a frizzle/frizzle silkie? that's what the feathers feel like, when you read descriptions... except as far as I know, they had no frizzle genes in their silkies.

If it's just a genetic thing in the blacks, that's okay too, I just need to know if it's a flaw/fault I don't want to breed. ;o

I'll take pics tomorrow.

Sounds like its down didn't get a chance to fully come in. Or it's a girl feathering in already.

Ok. I really don't know about the genes. I've had NN silkies before however none had what you are describing.
