EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

TJ egg update.
So it is day 22/23. Bator is at 99- 99.5 so not really cold.
2 chicks out and one pipped.
It seems like these guys need the extra time.

Chicks are yellow and single combed but have a wide comb area (almost thought they were pea combed -suspect they are hetero) and they look like they will be crested

Clean white (not yellow I think) legs.
So mom is likely leghorn but dad could be anything. Oh well at least it is not Silkie!

The ayam cemani hatched just fine -in fact early with same temp setting.

I reluctantly put the bator temp up to 100.5 (checked with clinical Mercury thermometer).

Reluctantly as I have 3 dozen new eggs in there and don't want to cook them, but really not sure it is the right thing to do. Thinking that I may put it back down to 99.5 when I get home from work.
Congrats on the ones that hatched, good luck with the rest.

Visit the website Mike suggested. I never ordered from him but always wanted to.
They have a pre-sale order
15 turkeys, for 4.99 each... under 100 bucks for 15 birds with shipping................ not bad, not bad at all... so tempting.

I think I'll order it this weekend and pretend I didn't, until may when they ship.... *hides face*

I'm ordering an "assorted" mix... LOL

I would say the delay in hatching the TJ eggs is how long they were stored. You can count on at least an hour longer to hatch for each day of storage.
Your carton should have a Julian date stamp on it, which is the date they were packaged.
Anything is possible but I wouldn't think they would have crested breed males running with their leghorn type hens.

Best birds, health wise.

You probably have local breeders in Texas.

There are dozens of them here.

Breeders of heritage birds start on around page 26. Hatcheries that sell commercial meat type start on page 13,

2 remarks if I may

1. The EPITHALAMUS and the pineal glad are responsible to the light response and the circadian rhythm.

2. The Hormon that starts the reproductive cycle is Gonadotropin Realising Hormon that short light period (photopetoda ) influence and enhance the secretion of its antagonist that prevents the secretion of the GNRH ( Gonadotropin Relishing Hormone )

Thanks. But doesn't the signal first travel via the optical nerve to the hypothalamus and then to the epithalamus and thereby reach the pineal gland?

The action potential from the RETINA goes to SOME areas in the brain. Some goas to the LGN( Lateral Geniculate Nucleous) wich layes in the THALAMUS and from there its travel to the optic cortex in the occipital lob of the Cerebrum. Some info goes to the SCN (Suprachiasmatic nucleus ) wich is responsible to the circadian rhythm by controlling the pineal gland, and some gos to some brain nuclear that controls the muscles that moves the eye balls. The Hypothalamus , that controls the reproductive system gets its info and commands from higher parts of the cerebrum that process all the sensory info that came from the sensory system including the eye. ( you made me refresh my neuroscience studies  )
