Good morning everyone!!! We have evidence of tapeworms in our laying flock... I used ivermectin on the teenagers a few weeks ago... The hens are either molting, or just starting to. Is it ok for me to treat them now? I used a pea size amount on a piece of bread for the 4 month olds. Any thoughts on how much I should give the big girls? I was planning on eyeballing it to "just a touch more"...

For those of you city folk, this how KC Strips are manufactured. I don't let our locker cut or freeze any filets, ribeye, or KC strips. Inevitably, they don't know what an 1.5" is. Ha! So I cut, vacuum seal, and freeze here at the house.

Excellent!
Make mine rare.
I've had butchers try to talk me out of thick steaks

The thicker the better.

I miss having our own beef. I'm planning on buying a side or whole custom cut in the spring from the farm up the street.
I found it interesting how cuts of meat are different from KC to St. L.. It was almost impossible to find a Porterhouse in KC. They're very popular here - with me at least.

Hey everyone! Is it just me, or is it a bit quieter here these days? (@lovechicks1293 , on the earlier versions of this thread, you could end up 300+ behind just getting up and going to the bathroom!!!!!!)

Bedtime with Tank is still a struggle. I reminded myself it's only day three. It seems that one of the three pullets is way low on everyone's pecking order - the other pullets and Tanks. Poor thing wanted to sleep outside so everyone would leave her alone. They finally settled down, but the GNH boys in the adjacent coop took exception to the ruckus and started crowing - fortunately they stopped. Next time I'll try adding the girls to the new digs first, then adding back Tank (as someone somewhere suggested). Not sure that would benefit much now, they've already begun adapting. I'll just need to be around for bed time for a while... I hope this doesn't last until Christmas - I don't think my chicken sitter could manage this.

Always learning (aka, always screwing something up...)

- Ant Farm
As long as the chickens are all safely locked indoors, I don't worry as much about squabbling and who is where.
I have a building with 2 sides, pullets in one and cockerels in the other. I changed pullet legbands before dawn yesterday and after I let them out, I closed their door because someone was supposed to come help me go through the cockerels to select a few more for culling. They never showed up so I let the cockerels out but forgot to open the girl's door. Went to lock up and the pullets had all squeezed into a trio apartment. 18 birds in a unit intended for 3. I just locked the door knowing they were safe for the night.

It is easier to catch up these days. I've been really busy and I'm praying I'll get all these projects done before the deep freeze. We're going to hit a record of 80 tomorrow and down into the 20s by this weekend.
I have a few runs of sealtite conduit to finish while it's warm. It's a pain to work with frozen.
I have to get the circulated water system completed in 3 buildings (7 housing units).
Redoing the nest box door on one of the main coops that has been vacant since the mink attacks. It was attached with a continuous hinge that I couldn't remove without taking the siding off the building which I didn't want to do so I decided to cut the 4' hinge off. What a pain. I finally finished that yesterday. Get the new hinges and new latching system installed and patch the hole where the mink got in and I'll be ready to move birds in. Hopefully today.
However, I still have to check on the bees one last time and that has to be done today or tomorrow while it's warm.

Penns and Canoe.... The wolves here were both introduced by the DNR..... And came here from Minnesota....
I think I remember that. How many did they bring in? Do they know how many separate packs are running the state now?

I think they were reintroduced at Yellowstone in the 90's.
They released 31 greys in 95/96. That was a pretty good thing for that ecosystem.
In the 3 years to follow, wolves eliminated 50% of the coyote population.
Elk are their primary food source. Around 40% of the elk killed are calves. However of the adult cows killed, most are very old with a mean age of 14, so past their reproductive prime. By contrast, human hunters outside the park kill cows in their prime with a mean age of 6.
Bull elk killed by wolves are primarily in late winter and a mean age of 5 which is the same age as those taken by hunters. Examination of wolf killed bulls show that 34% had exhausted all fat reserves. So it's possible they would have been winter kill anyway.
Pronghorn have benefited since most of fawn mortality was by coyote predation.
Bison and moose only represent 2% each of the wolf kills.
In summer, grizzly and black bears scavenge wolf kills. In winter, eagles, magpies and ravens scavenge. Sometimes ravens track wolf packs in anticipation of kills.
I think that Mr. Master's knowledge is correct if my memory serves me right. I have heard wolves in the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness and Isle Royale. I also am aware of the red wolf being reintroduced in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, that might have been a failure and resulted in removal, I am not sure.
The greys introduced themselves on Isle Royale over 50 years ago which has a much less diverse ecosystem than Yellowstone. So their primary food source is moose which had become overabundant. The wolves completely eliminated coyotes from the park which were an invasive species moving in after wolves had previously been extirpated.

Hey, did your aquarium repair work?

The larger the tank, the easier they are to keep stable, but the more expensive they are to set up.

Only 3 pages behind since I left work.... It is pretty quiet!
