I was pleasantly surprised to be able to drink my JB openly until seven (when my mother showed up) last night. Today I mixed it quickly into a Pepsi bottle. My day has improved!
Category 2 hurricane Otto just made landfall and is hammering Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Latest hurricane in the Caribbean ever. Strongest November hurricane ever. First hurricane to ever hit Costa Rica in history.
There will be life threatening flash flooding and mudslides.
Luckily for CR, they are on the south side of the eye so they aren't getting as strong of wind as the Nicos.
Also luckily, where it hit is sparsely populated and the swampy wetland area of both countries. There are a lot of volunteers and scientists in the area working with sea turtles and other wildlife.
She doesn't like it? Neither do I. My wife won't help. My coop fairy came up and helped me do 5. I have 5 or 6 more to do soon and another 8 in a couple more months.
Not completely finished yet but this is the way they show up in the market in Catalonia so people know they're getting a real black Penedesenca rooster that is worth their $50.
The black feathers, carnation comb, white earlobes and slate legs.
That's the only way to know for sure.
There was a skim ice on little lake yesterday... Wish i went fishing. I love putting my boat in that stuff..... The walleye are usually hot at that time.
Other than the mess of wet feathers all over the place, no, not really. I guess I'll just have to do it all myself from now on, and not let her eat any.
I have no clue why, but the one who looked just like Tucker had darker meat than the other two, who were predominantly white with some red thrown in; all three of them were at least half brothers...sae daddy, maybe different mommas. I wonder if the gene for coloration also determines meat color.
There's still one that bears a strong resemblance to Tucker; we'll eventually see what color his meat is, if I can ever get my hands on him.
Doesn't always help to get medical attention.
I dropped a huge metal rack on my foot at work. It landed just behind the steel portion of my steel toed shoes and broke my toe.
I went to the nurse who was very snotty throughout our interactions. She asked me what was wrong and I told her I thought I broke my toe. She asked if I had steel toe shoes on and when I said yes, she said I couldn't have broken it. When I insisted I did, she said, "Well take your shoe off, I can't see through it"!
Gingerly, I was able to get it off and she finally decided to take x-rays. After seeing the x-ray, she asked if I ever broke a toe before. I said, "yeah, about an hour ago".
Ok, here's the best I can do for a recipe but keep in mind I eyeball everything and taste as I go.
I think I used about 5 small pie pumpkins to make 3 pies.
I cut them in half after removing the stems. Once I cleaned the seeds and strings, I baked them upside down on a pan of water at 400 for about 20 minutes.
Cut the meat off the skin and put it in a food processor.
Luckily it made exactly 3 cups of puree.
I was making 3 different kind of pies. One with coconut milk, one with nonfat evaporated milk and one with sweetened condensed milk.
I grated a whole nutmeg seed and ground several cinnamon sticks, some whole cloves, whole allspice seed and some fresh ginger root.
Into the puree I put about 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of cloves, 1 teaspoon of allspice, 1 teaspoon of cloves, 1/2 teaspoon of ginger and mixed it some more.
I put a cup of the puree into a mixing bowl, added a can of coconut milk, 2 eggs, 2 pinches of cinnamon, a little salt, a pinch each of cloves, allspice, nutmeg and ginger. Then about 5 drops of pure sesame oil. For sweetness, some agave nectar and maple syrup. I have no idea how much of each.
That was pie 1.
For pie 2, it was another cup of puree, a can of nonfat evaporated milk, 2 eggs, the same amount of each of the spices. I added agave nectar, a tablespoon of molasses and a big dollop of Missouri honey. After tasting, I added more agave. Then about 5 or so drops of grapeseed oil.
Pie 3 was a more traditional recipe off a can of pumpkin puree with sweetened condensed milk, except I used fresh pumpkin and the same amount of freshly ground spices with no added sweeteners or oil.
I'm pretty sure that's it. I'll add more if I can remember.
A cup of puree with coconut milk and spices.
I spilled some on the crust of that one on the right.
Thanks!!!! I'm a bit frustrated with myself - it was all finished and clean, then I let it go for a year and a half while getting started in chickens (they sort of took up all my attention), and it's a lot more work to clear them. I could have at least planted proper cover crops...
Thanks!!! Hard work, it is, but it's my own fault.
So, do you think I have enough lemongrass?
And I still have at least that much still left in the garden, needing to be cleared out of the end of one of the beds. It's in there like concrete. I actually BROKE one of my shovel on this stuff. NEVER in the ground again - only in pots from now on (I have several bits ready to go into gallon pots for propagation from this plant).
Chicken People is interesting so far... I'll be interested in what other people think.
Lemongrass oil is a honeybee attractant.
If you put a few drops on cottonballs in a baggie with slits in it and put it on some hive frames with drawn comb about 10+ feet in the air, you can catch swarms between late winter and early summer.
I really like lemongrass in soups and with chicken. I am freezing this batch (it's a LOT more than one would need for a long time).
Did you know... that lemongrass is the origin of citronella oil and is a natural pest repellant? I will be looking up ways to use it like that. I've decided to take the extra leaves, etc. and mulch them around some of my plants (but not others) to see if the dried leaves work well as a mulch to repel bugs.
Was wide awake at 3:30AM. Figured I should get a start on the day. Turned the turkey in the brine, having some coffee, then putter in the kitchen some to prep for the day (clear surfaces, cut up veggies, etc.)
Son didn't get the smoked turkey ordered in time so he's making a fresh turkey. He came last night to brine it and make the dressing. I was his prep cook.
He's not cooking the whole dinner. Just the turkey and dressing and a green bean casserole.
Wife made broccoli and cheese casserole, mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, cheese cake, etc..
I can smell it from here; wish I was there to help you eat it
You know where Lewisburg PA is, off rte 15? GS & fiance moving there, supposedly before Christmas. He goes to Penn State (been going to a satellite campus), she works for Bechtel.
